The smilin one---newbie

Hey there I am new to orchids. But I have purchased a few Vandas for my mother as well as a few other misc orchids. I am interested in pursuing Ghost Orchids mainly. I am interested in building vivariums so I can keep the orchids inside. I have a few snakes and am looking forward to getting some orchids. Thanks Todd

:welcome: Aboard Todd ... did I read snakes ... you will find quite a few OB members are really up on the vivariums, personally built and or store bought. As for myself, indoor growing, no viv here. It's great to have you on the OB, please share your :photo:s in our members personal gallery and a wealth of information comes with your registration. Geezzz you did say snakes.

Hello, Welcome to the forum. What kind of snakes do you have? got any pictures? I looked into getting a ball python several months ago but couldn't find a cheap baby white white one anywhere. I think the color mutation was a snowball python. Though I could be mistaken, I don't know to much about snakes.

snakes

Lets see I have a few.
10 ball pythons 2 male pastels 2 female pastels the rest are normals

4 Womas
3 boas. A pair of Hypos and a pet boa
2 tri-color hognose
2 whitesided bullsnakes
2 honduran milksnakes.
And more rats and mice than I want to think about.

sweet! a professional! Now I can bug someone on questions

Now for the ball python questions. Was I right on the name of the color mutation for the white ball python? What's the relative temp. and humidity that you keep them around, and is the temperature and humidity constant year round? How long do they live for? How big are the rats/mice that you feed them and how often do you feed? Do you feed them live or dead mice/rats?

**edit** as for viv. compitable orchids I would check Rob's (Username Littlefrog) website. I'm not to familiar with which ones they are but I definately know that jewel orchids work well for vivs. As for the ghost orchids. I haven't had first hand experience with them. I've read that they like stagnant air. So they may not be to compatible with other orchids growing in the same viv. I don't know who sells individual plants, actually i think oakhill does, but if your looking to get a flask HBI has them www.orchidflasks.com. Incidentally, here's a link to some more ghost orchid info from HBI, http://personalpages.bellsouth.net/f...qanda.html#Q21 . Mick's flasks are great. If you look to purchase and have lots of questions from/for him I'd call in rather than e-mail. Hes rather quirky about responding to lots and/or long e-mails. If you do decide to get a ghost. Please do share. I'm quite interested in hearing about it and its progression :)

Hello! I like snakes too, but I don't have any. I don't have pets because sometimes I need to travel and there is nobody to look after my pet if I had one.

The Vandas are at my mothers house. I love orchids, but have this Ghost Orchid itch I need to scratch.

It woudl probably be a Leucistic. The price they are getting currently is for investment. It will be some years before they make it into the pet trade.

What's the relative temp. and humidity that you keep them around, and is the temperature and humidity constant year round?
They are let on Heat Tape. The temp at the tape is around 92 which gives me in the high 80's inside the cage. I live in Florida so humidity has never been a problem. If they have a problem sheddign you can always soak them. The temps emain constant helps in digestion. If you are trying to breed them. Than they have to be cooled for a few months to bring about the production of Folliculs which is needed for breeding.

How long do they live for? How big are the rats/mice that you feed them and how often do you feed? Do you feed them live or dead mice/rats?

Around 15-20 years depending on care. The size of the food depends on the snake. I tend to feed something That will put a lump in them. I tend to feed every week. They somemes go off feed for months on end and I need them to keep their weight up incase they breed.
