Den. Sirin Stripe has lump (flower spike?)
 

Hey all, this is probably my first post on here so please forgive my ignorance!
I bought this orchid in January of 08 for my fiance from the sickbay of a local flower/plant shop.

I've been taking good care of it from what I know of plants. I have a new shoot coming up, and there's a new lump on the oldest stem about right where a flower spike should go.

If it is a flower spike, how long till I see a flower? This lump (I am an advocate for neglect so it could have showed up weeks ago) hasn't grown since I saw it a few days ago.

Oh and it was marked Sirin Stripe, but I've never seen a sirin stripe (searching on google at least) that looks like this.

Only time will tell....could be a new root trying to poke thru or could be a new spike tho I don't think so. Wait 'n' see. Good luck

hmm.. maybe a keiki? has anyone seen anything like this? It's in the same location that a spike WOULD come out... but don't spikes grow REALLY fast?

I'll vote for a possible keiki. It's definitely not a leaf and not new growth as they come from the bottom. Spikes usually initiate from the top of the canes in Dens. Time will tell though!

It could be one of two things: a flower spike or a keiki. We have to wait and see.

I had one do that and it turned out to be a spike. At this stage of development it could either be a spike or a Keiki. Too soon to tell for sure. Keep us posted :)

hey, the pictures might be a bit unclear as to the location of the lump, it's about 2/3 up the main cane (oh god... it's snowing...in june!)
I hope it's a spike, will keep you informed!
Oh my tolumnia variegata is growing a keiki, should I seperate them once I see a decent root system on the keiki? They're on a piece of cork about 1X3 inches.. not very big.
Oh, the main cane has already flowered from the top before I got it, and from the sides a bunch, so maybe it's just working its way down the cane?

My limited expertise (well, actually non-expertise with Dendros) is if the nubbin (bud) developes stripes, it's almost certainly a keiki or new shoot. Watch for roots at the basal part of the growth.
