side mount phals
 

Hello:waving i am interested in growing phals on a trained side mount, i have been growing them in spag and clear pots, but i have seen pictures posted on this site from the Eastern Countrys where they grow alot of Phals on this pourous 1 1/2" matierial? they look like they like to hang sideways on a wall like this? does anyone here grow phals like this? do you have good luck with this side style mount? what is this 1 1/2" pourous material? it dosent look like cork? where in the USA can i obtain this material? any help would be great my freinds!!:scratchhead:

Hi Craig! Can you tell us more about what this porous material looks like, such as color and texture? Can you perhaps find a picture to show to us?

Becca Hello, ok,, look under the" phal alliance " section on this site, its a listing on the first page of threads listed, its a fairly new listing, it is a thread called "Orchid Exibibition from Taipei " there are photos, lots of them, of phals growing on this pourous matierial im talking about, and hanging in this side mount fashion, i havent seen this matierial and i am trynig to find out what it is, and if anyone has good luck growing phals, hanging like this ,on this matierial, they look happy!! thanks for you help, i hope this makes it easy for everyone to see what im talking about. update: ok well Teri on the other listing says this may be slabs of tree fern?, or a product called Epi-Web?, does anyone here grow them like this? and do you have any luck??? they sure look like they are hanging in a natural way!

All of my Phal species orchids grow like this. Some of them are on cork, some are on Epiweb ( Category Listing - EpiWeb ) and some are in small baskets or plastic containers with holes cut or burned through the sides for drainage or even suet feeders.

I just put a little sphag under the plant, place the plant upside down and top it with a little more sphag to protect the roots from what is used to tie it down. I use either fishing line, twist ties or those plastic zip strip thingys :)

The last photo is of my favorite Phal equestris, a gift from Gin and the sideways mount idea came to me from her :D

Hi Craig! I have a Cattleya mounted on a slab of EpiWeb and it is just as happy as can be! Give it a try and be sure to keep us updated with photo's!

Sue, now I know what to do with my empty Suet feeder! I stopped using because the squirrels were eating all of the food out of it.
