the orchid shed

been working hard.

re doing the siding on my garage and decided to turn an outside bathroom into my orchid winter haven.

added 4 low windows that after further review are pretty much worthless. Oh well it looks nice inside.

tore the walls out..it was pretty ugly. I didnt use the batrhroom outside. Im not sitting on a spider.

more destruction. it was much more work than I really needed.

bought some cedar closet liner. its almost fully lined. I dont think orchid roots like the cedar oil very much but I know they wont be any bugs in here.

almost done. 4 x 4 LED gro light. vented exhaust fan. a 1 ton AC unit and a new tile floor.

Ordered the cedar siding today. It went up 300 dollars since I bought the lining a few months ago.

I could have bought a greenhouse. :)

That's nice! Your hard work is going to pay off in a beautiful space that the plants should love. I'm curious what you mean when you say the windows are pretty much worthless?

Very nice! I'm stuck in grow-tent land for awhile, but one day I'd love to build a space like this (or a greenhouse).

the angle of the roof and the sun with the windows being where they are get about 3-4 hrs of morning sun across the inside of the build out. its not exactly the flood of morning sun I wanted. If I had used one them ancient sundial motion calculators on my wrist and stood still for 4 hrs I would have known the light was going to be limited by the angles of the sun vs the roof angle :)

Grow tents are fine for your stuff inside. They get small real fast. Then you have 2 grow tents then 3 . The accessories for grow tents get expensive fast. Ive experienced all of this on my short return to orchideering. Its seems to be costing me more this time.

All is well. The LED fixture I might need 2 of them as I want to hang the vandas from closet rods across the back wall. Have some shelf and plants in a rack up on the other wall. Stuff on the floor in dark corners I was trying to avoid but its not a grow room yet just a shelter so I dont get beat up by the cold again. I had a plan this time.

 I have running water and a drain in the floor to add a +. Rot my garage down from the inside this time..ooooooooo

It’s good to see you making progress but hard to understand what your thinking was with the low windows.wouldn’t it have been better (and not too late) to move them higher, or perhaps put floor to ceiling windows in on that side? Wouldn’t it also maintain the value in your home better to have a more conventional window setup?

RJSquirrel 10-18-2022 08:04 PM

I got tired of putting windows in and said enough already.

its a garage and the home remodel guy convinced me dont worry about the future enjoy your home now.

I let others worry what to do when the time comes.

down to 40 tonite its happening fast almost got caught again!!

I did put the cuthbertsonii out to enjoy the cold weather. They should love that 40 degrees

manageable limits have been reached. :waving

Garages are always weird even when they’re not. I like what you did with the space. More windows up top would make it feel more normal but the low windows are better than no windows! A rolling rack and a few more lights would probably give you room for new plants. ;)

have the siding coming in and Im done with this one for awhile. Going to make a great little re-potting transplant station, Orchid I.C.U. :).

If this doesn't make me happy I have a shower in the master bedroom I dont use.........

Very nice! That cedar is beautiful. :)
I am of the theory, too, that it is important to enjoy one's home without worries to the feelings of the person who will own the home in the future. Our late elderly neighbors had to make accommodations to their home so they did not need to move and worried it would not sell but, when the house went up for sale, it was bought immediately by a retired couple who saw those changes as a good insurance to their own future.
