Welcome, Andrew.

Your apparently extensive experience with other plants could actually work against you when it comes to epiphytic orchids. They’re entirely different critters that grow far more slowly than do most terrestrials.

The first thing to think about is gas exchange through-, and air around the roots.

I'm hoping my love for growing other flowers doesn't hinder my thirst for growing these beautiful flowers. I am here to learn, but I will interject my experience when I feel necessary. Alot has been learned in two generations of growing.

I fully understand where you're coming from!

When I was in college, I volunteered at what is now the Atlanta Botanical Garden, amassed a collection of over 500 tropical plants, and was known on campus as "the plant doctor". If folks' plants had issues, they'd give it to me to "fix". If I did, they'd slip me a couple of bucks. If not, I got to keep the flower pot.

Then I was asked to help water the weird plants with interesting flowers in an adjacent greenhouse.

I was given a cattleya, and it took me a good 2 years to kill it, but that got me determined, and it didn't take long until I basically forsook the tropicals for all orchids...

Have you ever experienced a cannabis plant in full flower? It is a sight to behold. My father dealt with leukemia for a long time and grew his own illegal crop top help with pain management. This is where my love for growing cannabis comes from, into my venture with growing cbd hemp.

Yes I have, but that was a long time ago...

The issue in south Texas would be low winter temperatures. There are plenty of orchids that like heat and humidity, but few of those tolerate even cool temperatures.

That's good to know. I may try and give the girls some porch time then
