Masdevallia Rechingeriana black spots
 

I just got this masdavallia rechingeriana. Its roots are amazingly healthy and there’s new growth. There are black spots on the leaves. It might have happened during shipping. Does anything jump out at you guys?

Masdevallias like high humidity, cool to intermediate temperatures (most of them) and always staying moist with pure water - very low dissolved minerals. When they don't get what they need they look like this. It might be from shipping.

I would not be able to keep one alive in my house without a terrarium. In addition, my house is too warm in summer for most of them.

I suggest you pot it in a small clay pot. Use a pot that will leave about an inch of space all around from the plant base to the edge. Soak the pot in pure water for a couple of hours to remove salts. Use distilled, reverse osmosis or rain.

Pot in sphagnum moss. Grab a handful of wet sphagnum. Wrap it around the roots in a circular direction. Now stuff the root mass into the pot. It should be tight enough the plant will not wiggle. If not tight enough, pull it out and wrap more moss. Water thoroughly with pure water.

Stand the pot in a saucer. Keep a quarter inch or more of water in the saucer. Healthy Masdies may use that much, or more, water every day.

Fertilize once a week while it's making new growth, and once a month when not growing. Wait a month from now to fertilize. Use very small amounts, no more than 1/8 teaspoon of 20-20-20 with micronutrients in a gallon of pure water. Take the plant to the sink. Pour solution into the pot until the sphagnum is wet with it and it runs out. Let it sit in the sink for a half hour. The roots will have taken up as much fertilizer as they can. Now flush with pure water, let drain, and return to the saucer.
