Growing on a chunk of lava rock

DirtyCoconuts 08-20-2020 05:14 PM

terrific and yes! clearly, screaming at the top of it's lungs

are they attached by the roots or is the fishing line still holding them on? Curious as i want to try this and was wondering if any epiphyte will take to a rock as long as it is wet or if they need some lithophyte in their parentage

Some roots on this plant have attached to the rock but they are thin so I don't trust them enough yet to remove the fishing line. I've grown quite a few others on lava rock without any knowledge of their lithophyte habits and they all readily attach to the rock with no issue. Here's one example from a sophronitis where she's manage to squeeze this fat root into the tiniest crevice lol

stellar- that does not surprise me as i see them invade the chunks of lava rock i grow them in inside of pots but still wanted to ask

love the display and the growing

Really cute and great job! I love those funky little flowers. I killed one of these a few years ago and it’s been on my list to try again. Do you mind sharing what your care is?

I also second the culture question. Is it difficult?
I tend to be a windowsill grower, and cant effectively grow things mounted.

Love the plant and bloom! Way to go!

Wow!! Will you look at that, now I've seen everything.

I haven't been growing this one for very long but so far it seems pretty forgiving. Since making this post I've actually moved it into a little pot with sphagnum moss. It seems to like it more and has grown a lot more roots and canes. I let it dry only slightly between watering.

Growing indoors, my temperature is around 77-80 in the summer to about 68-75 in the winter. It doesn't seem to know the difference and is growing new canes even in January. I've heard it doesn't need a dry or cool to bloom and can bloom at any time. Mine hasn't bloomed enough times for me to know for sure.

I give it pretty bright artificial light, on the same shelf as mini cattleyas/laelias.

Like with all my other plants I fertilize each time I water at 25 ppm.

can't wait for it to bloom again as I am just remembering how adorable it is :)

Oh, what a cutie!
Is it fragrant?

DirtyCoconuts 02-02-2021 06:51 PM

Veggie- can I see this in its new pot? I am in possession of one and I know you have gotten it to work lol
