How and when to repot a stanhopea

Hi everyone I have a new stanhopea that has totally outgrown the basket ,bulbs are outside the holes in the basket, how can I remove it without doing damage and will repotting it now prevent it flowering this year

Hello. Stans are wonderful and I look forward with great anticipation for mine to bloom. But it's best to wait till after a bloom to repot. What type of basket is it in? http://stanhopeaculture.com is a good read and something I refer too often when I usually second guess my approach to their care. Pix when able plz.

Anything in the basket other than the plant? You can just plop into a bigger basket.

Agree with above. You can also cut up the basket to release the plant.

First, Welcome!

I cut baskets... in fact, since the spikes sometimes develop trapped behind part of the basket (instead of heading for the holes) I'll clip out the part of the basket around it. (Plastic or wire basket... wood you really can't)

Don't repot until it is done with any blooming it might do. If you can post photos, it would help solicit some more specific ideas.

Thank you all for the help, I am new here and have not figured out how to post pictures

There may still be a requirement that one have 5 posts to add photos (if so, 3 more and you're there). But I think have seen other new members post photos before that, so I'm not sure that is still true. At any rate... from the Quick Reply dialog box, click on the "Go Advanced" button. Scroll down to Manage Attachments. When you click on it, another window will pop up. Browse to the photo file you want. After you have selected all the files you want to post, click the Upload button, then you can Submit Reply.

I edited the thread title to "Stanhopea" ... something only a Moderator can do ... important for having the thread show up in searches.

if it spikes i cut away mesh and once it out grows this board (6") i can just cut a board sideways to the length i want and add an appropriate sized mesh basket (gutter guard [awesome stuff[)
