Coffee grinds at fertilizer?

Hello everyone,

I heard from someone that they use coffee grinds as a fertilizer for their orchids and it's been blooming for the past three years. Is there any truth to this?

I've used them for azaleas but not for orchids. I also used crushed eggshells out there, but have never heard of anything home-grown like this for our precious orchids. Maybe the old coffee grounds might work for the semi-terrestrials.

I'm pretty sure that coffee grounds is just used to make the soil more acidic for garden plants and such. I could be wrong on this but I'm fairly certain it would not make a good fertilizer. Do you know of anything of nutritional value that is in coffee? I sure don't! :scratchhead:  I would also think that it would clog up orchid media and make stuff sort of muddy. But this is just a guess. :blushing:

In the beginning, it will really 'perk' them up. Especially in the morning. Over time though, they will get hooked on it. They will be grumpy as hell until you give them more. They will become jittery, and you'll see their leaves quiver for no apparent reason. Avoid anything foo-foo, containing the words latte, mocha, etc. Sorry, couldnt resist.

Ive heard of it, but not used it.

Very cute, dave! That's the reason I gave up coffee several years ago. Just the thought of my poor orchids living through that withdrawl headache..... I think they will stick to decaf!
