Cattleya black spots, cracked leaves
4 Attachment(s)
Hi,
I have two Cattleyas and both stopped flowering then one of these now has cracked leaves and some strange black spots only around the edge of the leaves. I assume it’s time to repot; how to fix the above issues? The leaves do not seem to be pale to me so it’s probably not sunshine. I am suspecting low humidity and that I can fix but that would not explain the brown spots. These are my first Cattleyas and I noticed their roots are darker than phals’ roots - I wonder if that’s ok or is their a problem. Attached a few images too. Many thanks, Agnes |
Friend, the plant does not look bad; media looks bad it's time to re-pot it. Please avoid using glazed pots, use terracotta pots.

The cracked leaf looks like mechanical damage. could this plant have suffered an accident that you don’t know about?
The black spots don’t look too sinister - the real question is are the spots staying the same or getting worse. Even the best cattleyas will look a bit more bedraggled then a phal. A well-grown phal will have beautiful dark glossy leaves, but a cattleya is just there for the flowers. As said already, the media looks totally gone and that would explain the dead roots. I’d use a slotted pot, good for air circulation around the roots. |
Thank you, I noticed two little new roots (?) growing on each of these plants.
I will repot these soon. The black spots did not change much and I just was not sure it’s something to worry about. I will look up how to repot Cattleyas and probably it is not much different than repotting a phal. Many thanks, Agnes |
