Sedirea japonica
 

I purchased this plant in 2009 from Napa Valley Orchids. This year it has two spikes, and one is branching. It's the first time I've had a branching spike on this plant, although it is usually pretty generous with the blooms. I'm very pleased!!

Originally classified as an aerides, someone decided it wasn't, so simply created a new genus by spelling the old one backwards - sedirea - and now it's a phalaenopsis!

Yes, I know it is now a phal, but I just can't wrap my head around that. If I hang onto "Sedirea" long enough, maybe it will come back:).

Lovely! Any cultural advice you can share? I got a Siderea in spike about a year ago. I think I kept it too dry for a bit and several buds blasted and it lost a few leaves. Now it is stable but hasn't produced any new leaves since I got it... I'm desperate for it to bloom again, the flowers are so lovely!

Lacie, the plant lives in my "indoor greenhouse", a plastic tent over a growing rack. It is in a southwest window, so plenty of light, although not fully direct in the afternoon as it is back a bit. The humidity in there stays between 60 and 70% most of the time, and the temperature rarely drops below 65 in the house. So, warm, moist, bright to medium light.


Did you repot when you got the plant? Mine usually responds with a new leaf after a repotting. I use a chunky bark mix appropriate for phals.

That's a beautiful Sedirea! Looks like it has enjoyed the 10 years in your care - double spike and branched!

I have fine since about 1.5 years, and it's decided to throw out a spike this year. I heard they could be a bit trickier to bloom than Phals, but whatever I did made it happy.

Me too, I just can't call it a Phal. To me it's Sedirea...

Thanks Fishmom! I was under the impression they liked to be dryer than a typical Phal so I have it growing in a Vanda basket in chunky bark. I'm thinking now I'll repot into an actual pot and keep it a little wetter. That would let me move it to brighter light too, which I also know they like. Thanks again!
