Member projects????

Don’t know if this is the spot to ask but I’m new so I plead stupidity if I’m wrong. What exactly are member projects? I saw that no one has done any of them since 2015. Just curious what’s up there and if anyone has been a part of one?? Thanks!

Love your question! I was wondering the same thing!

I saw a quite a few years ago a members project that was like a group of people who all were deflasking seedlings so it seemed like it was one forum where you went for any problems when deflasking or updates, just everything which seemed SO cool.

This year I am attempting to deflask seedlings for the first time and wish we had something like that going on!

The projects were (back then) simply to all grow the same orchid and compare notes, and see who would get it to bloom first. The first couple projects were easy to organize, but then got huge, with over 40 people joining! Back then we'd select a list of candiate plants meeting our criteria (small plant, intermediate temperature, max $25, available in sufficient quantities), then vote for our top 2-3, then vote for our favorite, which became the project plant.

Interest in the projects waned, and the people who organiwed most of them quit the forum entirely, or had much less time for the forum (as was the case with me). A few projects have been sporadically organized since the end of the golden years of the projects, and there's now discussion about another one (but culture based rather than plant based), if you go have a look in the Member projects sub forum.

That’s awesome. I was super intimidated the first few times I deflasked orchids. I had read so much about all these steps you need to take and in the end it was super easy. I used warm water with daconil in it to rinse the plants clean. Let them sit on some paper towels for like an hour to let them dry of, then just potted them up in compots and kept my humidity high. As far as the member projects go I’m more than happy to buy a flask and send out some plants to people who might actually be interested. Sounds kind of cool.

There are still a good number of people who consistently visit this forum to organize a project.

If you would like to organize a project, you are more than welcome to, you do not need to be someone who has been on the OB for a long time at all.

I've not fully participated in one, but I've seen how it works. If you can get it organized and have enough people interested, it can be pretty fun.

Try it out and see.

Well in that case, maybe we try to do some sort of project and customize it to fit people wanting to participate! I would be willing to try and organiZe one for deflasking something! Anyone interested in the sounds of this??? If so we can start a new post and work out details!
