Anyone Looking For Kool Logs?
I have seen a few great Kool logs that members have used to mount some of their orchids with. I liked them so much I just purchased some myself . If anyone is looking for them here is the site I got mine from.

Thanks for sharing this - I know there has been some discussion about them, so great to have the link!
|
I've mounted several orchids on kool-logs now. So far so good, but it's only been a few months.
|
How do you feel about Kool logs for a phrag franz glanz? The man at kool logs said it should do well and he has some mounted on them.
|
I haven't tried any phrags. So I can't comment.
|
What about mounting a phrag at all, if you could keep it moist? Do mounted phrags do well?
|
Since Phrags grow along river backs, contact moisture is needed. SO I would think it would work. I would use a pretty big Kool-Log tho as moving it might be difficult in the future.
Phrags generally aren't grown mounted as far as I know. I grow mine in plastic pots sitting in 1/2 inch of water since they like "wet feet". |
What the heck. Mine is in plastic pot with mostly spag moss sitting in water. There are 2 divisions. I have had it at least a year and i think it was the same size when i got it. Maybe the leaves have gotten a little longer. I dont know how many divisions it should have before blooming. But really, same size? Might try the KL. Thanks Carrie

Funny, I just ordered one and it should be here tomorrow.
|
Collette what size and what are you going to use it for? I did three different mini guys and i am going to try the phrag.
|
I have about ten orchids on Kool-Logs so far:
Sophronitis cernua Sophronitis brevipedunculata Amesiella monticola Cochleanthes amazonica Maxillaria juergensii Zygostates alleniana Lepanthes imitator Masdevallia floribunda Restrepia dodsonii Aerangis luteo-alba Dendrochilum pumilum Bulbophyllum hirundinis Bulbophyllum roxburghii Some were distressed when mounted on the kool-log and are now coming back. The Bulbo. roxrurghii is in bud - first Bulbo bloom for me. Be sure to tell us how your Phrag fares! |
I have dend unicum, dinema polybulbon, and scaphyglottiz. How often do you add water? I did them yesterday and they are dry tonight.
|
I add water when they need it. The need is greatly dependent on the temp and humidity levels

I got a large one for a Masdevallia uniflora. I have owned it for about 9 months and doing great until this last bunch of hot weather. I am afraid I will have my first orchid loss, so I am getting a Kool-log to hopefully save it. I wasn't sure about size, I just saw the large, med, small and x-large. I didn't realize that if you clicked on the log it gave you the actual size of the log until after I ordered :( Bulbofett has her masdie on a large so I should be good. I hope it gets here as expected because so far it has been sitting in Indianapolis for 28 hours. I had ordered an orchid and it was in Indy at the same time. Luckily the orchid came today. |
I would love to see some pics, especially with details of the roots on the logs!
|
You can go to the Kool-logs page for lots of pics

Got my kool log today. I really like it. Might have to get a few more. The was the first time I ever mounted an orchid, it was fun. Checked the log later in the day, it does feel cool. Hope my masde likes it.

I know this might sound stupid but I cant be the only newbie to mounting to ask it. I am going to try a phrag on the kool log. Do i mount it with roots pointing down like when on a pot, roots up, or put roots on log with plant sticking straight out?
|
I think you can do whatever way you think is right for your orchid. I mounted mine 1/2 up with roots down and leaves up against the side. There are a few videos on Youtube about mounting on Kool log. Holy City Orchids has one.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCSUNtmrYCs On the sheet they give you they say "For creepers, mount low on the log. For others I like to have the base of the plant about half way up the log, leaving room at the bottom for about half or more of the existing root mass length. The new roots will not extend down as far since they will want to stay close to the Kool-log." |
Thanks Collette! Duh to me! I am checking that link now
---------- Post added at 03:16 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:06 PM ---------- After watching that i can see that i put the moss from top to bottom of log instead of a small patch. That may be why is dries out every day? Too much moss exposed in a thin layer? What do you think? I could remove some |
You can always take some off. I put a small thin layer on the Kool log before O mounted. (I didn't make mine very big because the plant I have is small and not a creeper, I didn't go all the way up with my moss either.) Plus after it perks up, I can always remount.
On the instructions they say: "....place a thin bed of moss from the top to the bottom on one side of the log. This pad of moss should be fairly thin and only needs to go about 1/3 around the log..... press into the grooves of the log with your hand." |
Thats what i did, up and down. I am thinking if i had done like you with only a pad under the roots, it would not evaporate so quickly because of the extra exposed moss. Mine are minis on the little logs.

I live in Texas and I covet Masdevallias-- a kool log might tempt me to try.
Is there anyway I can 'fake' a Kool-log to see if the concept works in my extremely hot and dry environment? We have had weeks over 100F, and I only cool my house to 77. It gets up to ~90F in my west windows. I am thinking masdevallias are going to have to remain my orchid 'white whale'... :/ |
