Is this black rot?

I've got a neostylis Lou Sneary 'Bluebird' that suddenly (and I mean within days) has black spots all up and down the main plant. It's now starting to spread to the leaves. I can only think it's infected with black rot. I've attached a photo. Thoughts?

Not sure, how long you had the plant for? Any environmental changes? Isolate it for now. I use a phosphoric based treatment for rot, usually as a prevention though.

It is fungal infestation not rot. It was at one point exposed to cold. Spray it with antifungal home remedy or you can buy the big guns in the garden store....
high humidity, warmth, good air circulation and bright light....feed it weekly

Mine gets purple coloring in that area, along with the same sort of spots, during the summer due to exposure to high light. I cannot tell if what you have is something different.

hmm if it was black rot I would expect your leaves to look a lot more yellow and dying.

probably best to spray it with some fungicide, but im not clued into vanda type orchids so I could be wrong.

Yeah im agreeing with leaf mite here, because mine does that during the sunnier months

Orchidgirl83 02-06-2015 06:35 PM

Yep mine does the same thing when exposed to higher light.

WhiteRabbit 02-06-2015 07:34 PM

My thought also was just pigment from higher light, which is nothing to worry about - but, I can't say for sure from the pic. Are the spots actually black, or more a dark purple?

CariC 02-07-2015 07:30 AM

Thank you, everyone, for taking the time to respond. I have another orchid that has pigment from high light, too, and was wondering if that's what it was. I'll spray it just in case.

I think the spots are black, but it's hard to tell. I'll spray and let you know what happens.

NYCorchidman 02-09-2015 02:03 PM

No, it is natural pigmentation on plants of this type.
Nothing to worry about.

If you give less light, then the color will lighten on the future growth but it'll always be present in some degree unless you grow it in too low of light, in which case you won't see flowers. lol

Happy growing!

Thank you, NYCorchidman. I've reduced the light levels and sprayed it with physan. I think you're right - it was just getting too much light. For some reason, my greenhouse is suddenly too bright for a few of my orchids. I think it's the combination of the trees being without leaves and the sun starting to come back toward the northern part of the sky. I'll definitely need to move a few of them around.

Orchid Whisperer 02-18-2015 02:01 PM

I wouldn't reduce the light as long as it isn't burning. The higher light will increase the odds that the plant will be able to bloom.

NYCorchidman 02-18-2015 02:55 PM

I echo the above comment.
Do not reduce the light because doing so will hurt the flowering potential big time.
Give it the maximum light without burning the plant and the flowering will be the best.

I give my little "vanda" type orchids nearly direct sun via window glass.
Some are nearly purple on the side exposed to light, but they all bloom fabulously well! hahaha

Okay, good to know. Thank you again!
