Evening from Norway :)

Hello,

Lol, interesting start :p Well, I have been lurking for a week or so, and read hundreds of posts, looked at pics, and I'm really happy to be a new member here. Thanks to Rosie for helping me out :)

I understand I need some more posts before I can post pics, soooo here we go ;) I've never managed to keep plants alive, even though I like them- but somehow orchids have been able to survive in my home. Always had a thing for those beauties. But only had a few, since I always kill them…

How I ended up here? Well, I havent been paying attention to my plants for years, got tired of killing plants. My hubby managed to keep some orchids alive, the funny part is that he hasnt done anything special, they have been in the same pots for years, and he just fills the pot with water, then waits for it to dry (maybe two weeks) and then he refill. Kinda like semihydro, only they are in bark- roots all rotten. But: somehow the rotten roots have kinda become like bark, and the plants actually survived for years, I think some are five years atleast. (Some have of course died due to overwatering over the years)

Suddenly I "saw" the plants, maybe a couple of weeks ago. I noticed how beautiful and special they are, charming in all their wilderness. Oh yes, they have most certainly gone wild :p I decided to care for them, and I soon fell in love with them all, started reading- ended up reading a lot here. I need to repot most of them, have repotted a dendrobium, gonna see how that goes. Problem is, I have to take it easy- cause I dont want to shock 'em, and I want the nature in each plant to be as it is. You'll see what I mean when I can post pics. So some are gonna need a bigger pot, some need a wooden basket for all their air-roots to be free. One has two keiki growing on it- and one keiki is even blooming, that one I just put a branch in to support the keiko while I'm thinking what to do. One has grown next to its pot- sideways, think it likes to grow that way, so not gonna force them to grow straight up.

And of course I have bought a couple more… Couldnt help it ;) Dont have that many (not yet, atleast), a total of 9 orchids. Looking forward to getting to know people in here, read, learn, yeah- you know, just enjoying these plants.

Oh- me? Female, married, kids, 29+ years ;)

And bad english is either typos cause I'm on my phone now, or cause its not my language- or both :p ;)

Hi Helene! :waving

Welcome from New York!

cbuchman 08-26-2014 09:20 AM

Welcome. Glad you found us. Can't wait to see your wild plants.

Helene 08-26-2014 05:53 PM

Thanks :)

Okey- a couple of questions:

Picture is limited, I can totally understand that. This might seem like an silly question- but does tapatalk apply as forum, or is it more like photobucket and stuff? (Cause if you use another site to upload pics, you can upload more?) just curious.

Lol, actually downloaded tapatalk cause of easier to be here on my phone :p

Second: should I post pics here, or is it better to post either in beginner section or repotting and stuff if I want feedback on what to do? My guess is in another place than this introduction thing?

Maybe just post some pics here just to show my plants, and more pics in the other theme/topic places when I have question about what to do.

Lol, as you can probably already tell: I'm a chatty one ;) Just thinking outloud :p

Anyway, guess I will do a little of both- thanks for welcoming me, appreciate it :)

Have a lovely evening all :D

Beauty? And growing:

Okay, just testing- gonna see how this looks on tapatalk, and then gonna log on the forum and see how it looks. Have no idea if this works, or how the quality is gonna be- bear with me, gonna learn eventually :p

Teaser from one of the wild ones- this is burnt, neglected, but still charming ;)

This is a big one:

http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...11ccb012c6.jpg
And that was one of the keiki, after I supported it with a branch.

If this works, I'm gonna post some more pics of these later this week, and of the other plants. Remember I've only taken care of them a couple weeks, been neglected for a long long time…

Edit: think I fixed the quality a bit

Helene 08-26-2014 06:11 PM

Okay, that didnt work to well… quality was downsized to much… Sorry, gonna go to bed, maybe I'll figure this out in a couple of days…

Well, atleast I'm only making a mess in my own thread, and not all over this place :p ;)

Testing… again… :p If this is as crappy as the others, I promise to stop posting untill I've learnt how to post a decent quality photo…

NYCorchidman 08-26-2014 10:08 PM

Welcome!
I miss your beautiful country. should visit again soon.
What part of Norway are you in?

I love the sunny yellow dancing lady orchid you got there! Everything is going root crazy. lol
Your oncidium looks like it is ready to be cut up into pieces and shared. ;)

I don't understand what you mean by you "kill them all", it looks like you have a green thumb to me.

Leafmite 08-26-2014 10:47 PM

Hello and welcome! Your orchids look great!

mmrobledo 08-31-2014 04:12 PM

Wow you were not kidding when you said they were wild but they look very healthy and the only thing you need is to repot them maybe in a bigger pot that would fit all these roots ..sometimes the orchids like to be left alone and they grow better like this good luck and i think you got the "bug" we all have haha next time you post pictures you are going to say you have 50 of them...so easy to go crazy they are all so beautiful...i have over 300 of them...

Helene 08-31-2014 04:57 PM

Evening from Norway :)

Thank you all, for the nice welcome :)

I used to kill all my plants, my hubby has been watering (drowning) them for the past few years- so they have been on their own. I just started noticing them a couple weeks ago. This is the keiki when I started caring for them, and now. I just gave it a branch for support for now.
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...d716b0c033.jpg

So I try to take care of them now.
This is another plant a couple weeks ago:
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...f01d97531e.jpg
Roots all over the place, messy as he.. but still kinda charming. Problem is that in the pot its mostly rotten roots (all of them are like that, but some plants have kinda turned the roots into bark), decided to repot, support with some branches just to see if I could figure out how the plant is going to live… :p not that easy.
Buuuut, while repotting I found most roots rotten, removed most of it, and put it in aquashield. The plant didnt seem to like being repotted to much, but even though some leaves are turning yellow- others are growing new leaves.

Lol, I know- its a freaking mess B)

Some of my other plants:
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...e624365418.jpg
Second time blooming, and got a new spike coming as well.

A new pink- cambria something maybe?- and an old blooming again, dont even remember if its white or pink or,
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...d960dfedef.jpg

Says cambria on the tag, but this looks like a brassia of some sort? Smells kinda sweet :)
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...d3924c1555.jpg

Well, yeah, I'm gonna repot all the big ones. Gonna post in the repotting topic, asking for advices later when I have some plans. The wild one and mr.big I was thinking of putting in big wooden baskets- for their roots to be free, just letting them grow like they want. The yellow one needs a pot thats oval, its growing way out of the pot on the sides.

The dendrobium-looking plant- have no freaking idea what to do… :p cut it into lots and lots of small ones? Its so messy, I cant see where to begin.

I dont know the proper name of any of my orchids.

Lol, guess its more than enough pics for today ;) Have a nice one all of you :)

Edited: keep writing keiko… :p

Helene 08-31-2014 05:18 PM

I know the root on the phal isnt a spike ;) doesnt show on the pic, or maybe it was the other plant. Many of them have new spikes now.

Okay, I promise to not spam you anymore tonight- just happy to find someone who cares about the plants, and a place to share and love looking at pics here and read and learn :)

Oh- pics looks okay on my phone- someone please let me know if they are to big or to bad quality or anything like that, on a computer, thanks.

TOMMYMIAMI 08-31-2014 08:59 PM

Welcome here. Great place for any orchid lover :-)

DeaC 08-31-2014 09:58 PM

Hey girl...you came to the right place! The fotos look great, all of them. Go slow and steady with your potting and dividing. Very easy to get overwhelmed. But the plants are very nice.

RosieC 09-14-2014 05:43 AM

Welcome to Orchid Board :welcome:

Seems the problem you had registering is a bit more widespread than I realized at the time, but glad I was able to help you get on.

Gorgeous looking orchids, so many lovely ones

Tapatalk is much easier when using a phone :) Tapatalk for Android used to offer a quota of pictures hosted by Tapatalk, OR the option to load them to the forum for the forum to host them. If you loaded them to the forum it used up your limit here, if you loaded them to Tapatalk it used up a separate limit that they had (and they let you pay for more). I've not loaded up any through that for quite a while so not sure if that's still the same. You can also use something like Photobucket or Flickr (I use Flickr), but then you need to use the options to post a linked image from them and I'm not sure you can do that from Tapatalk or not. The link in my signature has instructions for doing it from a PC, but I have not used Tapatalk enough to write instructions for that.

Have a lovely evening all :D

Just as you have thought, if asking questions you are more likely to get answers in other places. Or in the future you will probably find more people respond to photos you have to show in somewhere like the 'Orchids in Bloom' section or something like that. However for an intro we love to see photos here as well. In fact let's face it, if you have orchids to show off we're not going to be that fussy where you post them, we love photos
