Bulbophyllum pardalotum x self

This is my first Bulbophyllum. I am reluctant to acquire Bulbophyllum because they seemed to me they require more attention than I could give them. And, I do not like odiferous flowers. This plant was reasonably priced, so if it turns out to be a plant I cannot grow, it won't be an expensive lesson! Right?

That's a cutie!

Brooke 06-30-2014 07:39 AM

I have the pardolatum growing on a round tree fern ball. It is a very cute mount and bloom BUT the flowers close up during the day, open at night. It has no offensive odor.

For me, it had to be large before it would bloom. It is watered once a day and once it starts blooming, will bloom for months. Mine is blooming now and has been for two months.

MattWoelfsen 06-30-2014 10:44 AM

Thank you Sonya and Brooke. Glad to know how to grow this plant Brooke. More importantly, glad to know it "ain't no stinkin orchid"! Kawamoto Orchids advised that this one will take 1 to 2 years to bloom.

Can you post a picture of your plant Brooke? I'd like to see what I am going to have one of these days!!!

Brooke 06-30-2014 03:37 PM

I don't have a picture of the plant because the blooms are always closed every morning. I can tell you it is a very fast growing Bulbo but it had to totally cover the tree fern ball before it bloomed. It now is growing on top of its self.

Cute and easy Bulbo, enjoy.

Brooke

MattWoelfsen 07-01-2014 07:56 PM

Okay Brooke, thank you for your reply. I can't wait to receive my new and only Bulbo. I'm glad to know it is any 'easy' grower.

My plant is in Fort Wayne, Indiana! It went from Hawaii to Memphis, TN and from Memphis, TN to Indianapolis, In and then it went by truck from Indy up I-69 to Fort Wayne. And I picked it up at 8pm, unpacked it and now it is hanging with my other mounted orchids.

The weather here in Fort Wayne has been very temperate BUT low humidity. So after growing here for two weeks, I decided to wrap sphagnum moss around the roots to provide additional moisture. The leaves were starting to look washed out. It has been four days since I added sphagnum and watered once a day-- they recovered their green color. This plant seems to react fairly quickly to its environment.

Wow, I love the colour!

MattWoelfsen 07-20-2014 01:22 AM

Thanks Tindomul. The leaves are a lovely shade of green. It is easy to grow an orchid when you start with a healthy plant from the gitgo!

SydneyH 07-20-2014 01:40 AM

I've been looking at all of these bulbos and finally decided I would get one to try. This was one of the bulbos I was looking at. Your plant looks healthy and should be a fun orchid.

Sydney

MattWoelfsen 07-20-2014 06:52 AM

Hi Sydney, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one out there venturing into growing a new type of orchid! From everything I read, this is one of the easiest Bulbophylum to grow. I would bet with your geography it will grow beautifully. Please post a picture!

SydneyH 07-20-2014 10:01 AM

I'm still at that stage where one, or two, of everything sounds good. LOL. Bulbophyllum have such unusual blooms that I just have to try them.

MattWoelfsen 08-01-2014 05:10 AM

It bloomed!

LovePhals 08-01-2014 09:40 AM

Awesome, good growing, you got a bloom very quick. And you have another bud about to open! I also tried my first bulbo this year. It is bulbo putidum. They seem like very forgiving plants, I am just awaiting mine to bloom still :). I find they like a lot of water.

Hiester 08-01-2014 10:00 AM

Well there ya go! I wonder, was it those bits of moss you tucked around, and increased humidity, that encouraged it to bloom? Cute flower.

MattWoelfsen 08-01-2014 10:32 AM

Thank you LovePhals and Hiester for looking. I think when I added the sphagnum moss it created a more humid environment from around the roots. Kawamoto Orchids indicated it was "bloom size". So I guess it was ready to bloom. Before I put the moss around the roots, it looked too dried out and it seemed I needed to water it at least twice a day. Now I water just early in the day, once a day.

It did not have any flower spikes. These came out a complete surprise. I have noticed that during the day this flower closes up. But at night fall and early morning, it is wide open as the flower close up.

TOMMYMIAMI 08-01-2014 10:37 AM

Very cute, I love the color on this one!

annak 08-02-2014 03:02 AM

Hmm! Being very recently bitten by the Bulbo bug, your story just triggered the funny feeling "I gotta find this plant"!
Very nice plant, lovely indeed. Congrats :-)

SydneyH 08-02-2014 03:17 PM

Congrats on getting a bloom so quickly. Whatever you're doing, it seems to be happy. :)

You don't need my permission tellmewhy! I enjoying seeing other friends' plants. Please post a picture of your plant. If you can also tell how you are growing it, that we would be welcome.

Thanks Matt
I don't have any special care for my bulbo. I keep them moist year round. And fed them every week with 1/4 tsp MSU.
Here my pardalotum :

Thanks! I received the plant back in March. When I first got it, it was mounted on a cork bark. The seller have this plant for 2 year but never bloomed for him.
After I received the plant I just can't keep up on watering it. It just look too dry for me on it mount so I took the plant out of it mount and pot it up in a pot.
Here is the plant when I first got it.

Annak, I give my plant bright shade. It is in the same place as my Phalaenopsis.

Sorry I know a very old post, but for anyone still growing it would you know the minimum temperature needed for this plant to not decline.
I purchased one recently and had a similar washed out look after being in the mail for 3 days and want to ensure its survival.

The hot weather has arrived (36c today), and my Pardolatum has lost 2 leaves right on queue. So I'm now down to one leaf and need to take action or it's Bulbo heaven. I guess I'm wondering now is this a cool grower only - does it tolerate heat? I have an B elassoglossum near it that's doing great.

edit - I may start a new thread and post a pic of what remains, I'm convinced it's a lack of water so would be interested in seeing how it goes in s/h.

Roberta 11-10-2020 11:09 AM

I think the secret to getting the relatively-cool growers though the heat is to water the heck out of them (twice a day or more)

estación seca 11-10-2020 01:30 PM

Bulbos often have very short roots compared to other orchids. If the water level in the S/H pot is too low the roots won't reach it. Either make sure the environment is extremely humid, or drill the holes much closer to the top of the container.

Bill Thoms of bulbophyllums.com pots in very shallow, wide containers. He puts a mound of foam packing peanuts in the center, then drapes sphagnum moss over it. He waters his Bulbos once or twice every day, thoroughly soaking them. He tries never to let them dry out. He says he needs to set some species in their containers in shallow dishes of water because they use so much water.

Hi! May I know what do you call the material of the slab used on the orchid below the picture of the bulbophyllum?
