About 6 years old or there abouts? I had Onc. Twinkle "snow". Very hardy but could only get one for one usually. Sometimes two for one. how did you get multiples all the time? Warmth? Fine bark or ?. Your secret please.

Oncidium Twinkle culture
Well, my secret is to be patience. Its all about watering and light. I only water these plants according to their needs. Water every day during summer and twice a week during winter. They need a lot of lights all year long, same intensity with cattleya. But be carefull on water. Too much water will kill the mid portion of the plant. Too little makes the leaves wrinkled. To minimized the possiblity of root rot, I used plastic basket. Flower spikes will takes an average of 2 months to develop. Flowers fully open will last for 3 weeks at 75 degrees. Thank you for all the comments.
|
What medium do you use for them, please?
|
Medium
I used bark. All of my Oncidium are planted on quick draining bark. The reason for this is because my greenhouse is equipped with automatic drippers and foggers for watering the plants. The dripper is controlled by a mechanical timer. My greenhouse has 4 circulating fans, non- stop and the humidity is maintain between 60-85%. I want to make sure that the plants are all dry out at night. I dont use sphagnum moss. In the beginning, when I started growing orchids, I dont pay attention on the medium. A lot of my orchids from Phalaenopsis to Miltonias died because of root rot. Thats why I always repotted my newly bought plants into the bark medium. I only use sphagnum moss on my mounted plants and never on potted. I do have draculas and masdevallias planted on a fine bark and potted on a plastic net pot. They are all happily growing on my terrarium.

That is insanely impressive! I can only hope that my little red one gets that big.
|
Those are insane!!!!!

:wow great growing, those look fantastic!
|
Wow, what amazing plants!!! I'm always happy to get only a handful of spikes on mine. Without a greenhouse it will be hard to ever get such a show, but I can certainly do better culture wise. My plants get neglected way too often, work gets in the way of my hobbies.

Spectacular! I have a Twinkle yellow I just got thats mounted and the flowers are just starting to open! Photo soon!
|
:yikes:
OMG. I've been impatiently waiting a week while the local nursery gets in some orchids. I specifically asked if they were getting Twinkles, because I missed having one. I should be able to get one tomorrow. Now I have something to strive for! |
Hi,
Unbelievably beautiful! One like that would be fabulous...but three, WOW WOW WOW Where did you purchase them. I having been really wanting Twinkle orchids and keep watching stores and can't seem to find them. |
SJF, not sure where you are located, but based on your zone it seems to be near me. North Jersey Orchid society show is this weekend and there are several twinkles available from the participating vendors that I saw yesterday: yellow, white and pink/purple ones.
The show runs through tomorrow at 4 PM in Wayne NJ. Details on their website: North Jersey Orchid Society - Home Page |

I don't think I can get up there this weekend. Thank you so much. Wish I could :(. I want one of each so badly. I live in Hillsborough in Somerset County. Where do you purchase plants in NJ? |
I recently got a red twinkle from Angels Orchids. They are right down the road in MD. Its a great looking orchid although the smell is not too pleasant for this one.

Parkside was offering Twinkles at the NJOS show. It is probably about 1 hour's drive for you. I was really excited about the NJOS show because of the vendors. I bought 6 orchids, all species. I'm a member of NJOS too and contributed 7 plants to the display and came away with 3 second place and 1 third place NJOS ribbons and this is my first show ever! |

I want to try to get to this one: https://sites.google.com/site/deepcu...me/events/show Just Saw it today. Were the Twinkle Orchids blooming? Small world...thanks fellow orchid lover! |
The Deep Cut Orchid show should be good. They were at the NJOS show. I won't be able to make it to that one as I am going to an out-of-town wedding.
And, yes the twinkles I saw last weekend were in bloom. You can call ahead to the vendors and have them bring one especially for you! |
