How many Den species do you have?
I just counted mine and I have 25 different Den species.
How many do you have and give us a peek at your list. :) anosmum var alba antennatum bracteosum bullenianum canaliculatum chrysotoxum crocatum cucullatum draconis farmeri findlayanum v oculatum formosae kingianum var album x kingianum lawesii lindleyi loddigesii moniliforme nobile pulchellum speciosum thyrsiflorum trantuanii unicum uniflorum victoriae-reginae I have killed: cuthbertsonii formosae heterocarpum lamyaiae brymerianum mutabile tobaense cyanocentrum masarangense |
I am only just starting off with species orchids in general, but I plan to have a LARGE number of dens! So far I've only got:
trantuanii peguanum subclausum (on its way in the post) The subclausum will be the first orchid I'm going to attempt growing outside on my balcony. It's cold tolerant, but will grow equally well in intermediate conditions. This will cover our Irish winters and summers nicely (I hope). |
I don't have too many Dens, but most are species
atroviolaceum (v pygmy) bigibbum (v compactum) kingianum (tipo and silcockii) victoria-reginae spectabile (seedling) nobile (keikis given to me last summer - one's blooming now) :) have killed: lawesii moschatum (honestly, I had the moschatum a few years, never bloomed, then just up and died) :p moniliforme I had avoided Dens for a while - with so many different types, they seemed intimidating to me, but the ones I have now, at least, are all very rewarding :) |
Well that's an easy question, I only have 2! kingianum and aphyllum. Neither like me, neither want to bloom.
I do have an aberrans on the way, which should be easier since it doesn't need a winter rest. :) |
Let's see...
amabile anosmum chrysanthum findleyanum var. oculatum speciosum aggregatum chrysotoxum griffithianum palpebrae thyrsiflorum fimbriatum var oculatum hancockii moschatum densiflorum bracteosum smilliae plus a bunch of hybrids... huh, never realized I have so many... |
I'm not at all familar with Den species, so I'll have to look all these up! I do want to venture out into Dens a bit more. (which is why I got aberrans)
|
Den. sp. (like delacouri)
Den. amabile Den. discolor Den. elliotianum (aka Den. garrettii) Den. gregulus Den. kingianum Den. lineale Den. longicornu Den. nindii Den. peguanum Den. stratiotes Den. taurinum Den. williansianum (I think, I forgot - they're small seedlings) |
only one....cuthbersonii
was thinking of getting a laevifolium someday |
Kinda missing Den. unicum. Might get one some time soon, idk.
I've been eyeing Den aberrans for a long while. Latouria Dens are something I've been trying to get back into again. I really love the Antelope Dens (aka Spatulata Dens)! I think the hybrids pale in comparison to their species counterparts. Not a huge fan of Formosae Dens, but Den. longicornu is awesome! Another one of my favorite groups are Dens in the section Stachyobium (i.e. Den peguanum, Den gregulus), 'cause most of them are tiny miniatures that fit into any collection easily. |
Oh dang, let's see if I can get these out from memory. I think this is all of the living ones:
nobile parishii loddigesii aphyllum findlayanum moniliforme tortile hercoglossum trantuanii draconis formosum cf. chrysanthum brymerianum lindleyi (incl. one that's prob. Ueang Pheung) jenkinsii lawesii canaliculatum speciosum tetragonum lichenastrum prenticei toressae striolatum wassellii not-wassellii (labeled that but vegetatively very different) linguiforme rigidum anceps equitans clavator Plus probably 8-10 hybrids. --Nat |
Dendrobium peguanum which I nearly killed off but is making a comeback so hopefully I'll see blooms this year.
Dendrobium spectible as well. Probably two years old but growing good. I think that lawesii is next. |
Den. aggregatum
Dendrobium anceps Dendrobium anosmum Dendrobium aphyllum syn pierardii Dendrobium bigibbum compactum Dendrobium cucumerinum Dendrobium lithicolum (bigibbum ssp. compactum) Dendrobium bulbophylloides Dendrobium equitans Dendrobium friedericksianum Dendrobium glomeratum 'HOT PINK' Dendrobium kingianum Dendrobium kingianum var. 'Alba' Den. lineale Dendrobium primulinum 'DeLeon' Dendrobium spectabile Dendrobium torresae Dendrobium unicum Dendrobium victoria-reginae Vappodes phalaenopsis(Dendrobium bigibbum) the regular long canes |
Awesome! It is so interesting that many of us have a few of the same plus many other different ones!
I have a bunch on pre-order for the May show next week....I can't wait. I'm not sure what he has in stock. I sent my wish list and hoping that tobaense, harveyanum and parvulum (aka delicatum v parvulum) are in the order. My wallet is going to suffer next week. |
unicum (in bloom)
cuthbertsonii bicolor (in bloom) tetragonum var. gig. kingianum bract. var. tanii victoria reginae ( in bloom) "" (blues bro's hcc/aos x royal blue am/aos) in bloom just traded gracillimum all are terrarium grown I have had countless others that I had to leave when I moved. |
next time dont leave them...Id take care of mailing if you give them to me LOL
|
aberrans
jenkinsii farmeri glomeratum kingianum kingianum Alba Ellen lichenastrum loddigesi margaritaceum nobile pierardi pungentifolium nobile Star Class striolatum sulcatum tetragonum tobaense unicum wassellii flekeri infundibulum |
ooh...I need a unicum as well
This thread is a bad influence!!!! |
unicum is a great species, one of my favorite orchids. Unfortunately I killed mine as it was beginning new growth last spring. :(

I got it through that order we did here on OB from Equatorial Plants / Ron Hanko put it together. I think they order once a year. I want to try again because you sure can't find that one in the states. I just got an e-mail from Paramount in Canada and they have my order ready. I'm getting harveyanum x 3 (just in case). My wallet is going dry. |
Woo hoo! My lawesii is budding and I just got confirmation that the vendor coming to Redlands is bringing me 3 x tobaense and our MOS is shipping our order together to Memphis. No paperwork required because he already took care of it since he's showing at Redlands.
I'm so pumped! |
antennatum
tangerinum spectabile pierrardi |
I have a kind of large collection of dendrobium species:
Dendrobium victoriae – reginae Dendrobium lamyaiae Dendrobium kingianum Dendrobium macrophyllum Dendrobium atroviolaceum Dendrobium x superbiens (listed as a natural hybrid) Dendrobium speciosum ssp. pedunculatum Dendrobium loddigesii Dendrobium chrysanthum Dendrobium lasianthera Dendrobium (? Also listed as Dockrillia?) aemulum Dendrobium chrysotoxum Dendrobium sulcatum Dendrobium usitae – (listed as a natural hybrid) I also have 8 Dendrobium Nobile and Dendrobium Green Lantern (Den. Phal type). After making this list I realize it seems like quite a lot. |
I have most of the Densiflora Section!
I just realized that I have almost all of the Densiflora (aka Callista) section. :verycool:
amabile chrysotoxum farmeri harveyanum jenkinsii lindleyi sulcatum thyrsiflorum I'm just missing (4): and the search goes on! :coverlaugh: brymerianum densiflorum griffithianum palpebrae |
I added a few more:
hercoglossum chrysopterum glomeratum bigibbum 4N x self lowii tobaense (YAY!) schuetzei hemimelanoglossum That means I have 37! I just updated my Orchid Journal (aka inventory ). It never fails that I find a few more to add to the "want list" while doing research on the ones I have. |
dendrobium tobaense , dendrobium cinnabarinum, dendrobium nobile , dendrobium tuahnanhii, dendrobium unicum
|
Just re-stumbled across this, boy it's been a busy year...
I've added- canaliculatum discolor v. broomfieldii gouldii lasianthera (a scraggy seedling, but it's started 3 new growths) lineale mirbelianum (a compot, gave half away) stratiotes strebloceras Plus several primary hybrids King_Of_Orchid_Growing, if you ever want to sell or trade a few backbulbs of your taurinum and/or nindii, I'd be very interested. They're very high on my want list. I don't have unicum, but see it for sale frequently around here and would be willing to get it for you. |

Den nindii never established well and it died. I had to start over with Den taurinum as well. I found out the hard way, that these were not as tolerant of cooler conditions as Den discolor was. It suffered quite a bit before giving up. I currently just acquired new seedlings of Den taurinum. In the near future, I'll be looking to do an Asian import from a Malaysian vendor. In this order, I may consider importing some of the Antelope Dens, idk. I have at least a couple interested in doing a group order with the Asian seller already. If you're interested, please let me know, so I can include you. Here're the current Dendrobiums in my collection: Dendrobium amabile Dendrobium bicaudatum Dendrobium discolor Dendrobium elliotianum Dendrobium hancockii Dendrobium gregulus Dendrobium kingianum Dendrobium lineale Dendrobium odiosum Dendrobium stratiotes Dendrobium taurinum |
I would be interested, thank you. I will PM you.
|
Wow, some of the lists are impressive. I love Dendrobiums, I just recently started to collect more of them, last year, and here is my little list:
Anosmum Goldschmidtianum Bracteosum Dockrillia Gatton Sunray Unicum Heterocarpum Parishii and than that regular white one from Home Depot that was my first and I have it for years and years but did lost the tag and not sure about the exact name:-) |
I have aprox 60-70 den species. At 1am I can't think of them all but here are some I can remember in no particular order.
Moniliformes(10 different types) nobiles( 4) loddigesii hancockii(2) Vic-reg longicirnu tobaense spectibile bellatulym Jacobsoni Prenticii Trantuai Jenkinsonii Reflexupetilum Lasianthera Unicom Lichenastrum Cuthbertsobii Lawesii Aggregatum pandiottii bracteosum( both pink and yellow form) Bracteosum x laevifolium chrysotoxum chrystianum( dwarf form) crumanatum lowii Dicheoides( regular and type 3 creeping form) garrettii Elliotianum Discolor Hasseltii kingianum lindleyii Alexandrae pierardii pseudolamellatum oreodoxa Olioglossum speciosa Mingles sapphire 4 Phal types There are some others but at 1 am and all my orchids are outside, it's a bit too dark to go check them out. I have killed a few, penguanum comes to mind. But it's my favorite species and I'll try just about any of them. |
How many Den species do you have?

Someone around here calls themselves the Oncidium killer, well, I'm not going to call myself the Dendrobium killer, but in the past, every Dendrobium that has found its way to my house has passed away.
However, now that I'm a little bit more knowledeable about Dendrobium -- thank you for that Orchid Board, I have started acquiring this plant. Den. spectabile--I bought this two months ago as a Lowes Bag Baby. It is thriving and has produced a small new cane. Den. species Tanchouzuru 丹頂鶴. This is a very small plant, it looks good even without a flower. I'm growing it like Neofinetia. That is my Dendrobium list. I have ordered five more Den. monilliforme. |
Well, my list is pretty short:
aggregatum kingianum no-ID hybrid My wish list, however, is far longer--you people are BAD influences.... Catherine |
Without the primary & other hybrids, not as many as I thought. I'm growing:
scabrilingue laevifolium christyanum (aka margaritaceum) cuthbertsonii compot At least, I hope I'm growing them. They're all pretty recently acquired. If I sneak in my primary hybrids, which it looks like I'm about to do, I've got: bracteosum x laevifolium (hibiki) cuthbertsonii x psuedoglomeratum cuthbertsonii x lawesii lowii x bellatulum (does this cross have a name?) also a few complex hybrids, but only one that I'm very excited about: Lori Tokunaga x Lime Frost. |
I don't seem to be doing well with Dens just now. The NoID's which were doing well a few years ago have gone downhill or died, I have a couple of new ones to see if I can do better with them.
Species wise I have a loddigesii but that's never done well. This thread has only just prompted me to realise I seem to have a Den problem in general :hmm |
