I am anxiously watching spikes grow on my Neo I got last summer - once I got spikes, I felt I NEED more Neos! lol (I do have another - a small division another OB member kindly sent me - haven't got that one to spike yet, not sure if it's big enough). I was eyeballing the bags of bottles and cans in my garage, that were waiting to be brought to the recycling center - and in my eyes, I saw a new Neo! lol - that finally motivated me to take them all down for recycling, and I treated myself to a new one  (fortunately they are small)

Call_Me_Bob 07-16-2011 01:01 AM

From what I have heard, variegation is a mutation, so there is not much chances that it will carry on through breeding. What would be an interesting cross though, would be a Phal. violacea x Neo. falcata. If both plants are supposed to have heavenly fragrances, then I am sure that it should be carried out to the children. I have a violacea Sumatra with two buds developing, but it is far to young to carry two pods, and I already plan on using pollen from my cornu-cervi flava on the Sumatra. Maybe next year is someone is willing to donate pollen. GOODNESS! Why are these lines of such interesting intergeneric breeding more popular?!?!

Norris 07-16-2011 01:19 AM

I'm not sure about self pollination with these, It wont hurt to try now, and if a pod develops, you can research if it will be worth the trouble to propagate the seeds.

I did try to cross the two kinds I have blooming now. It will be interesting to see if they form pods.

Call_Me_Bob 07-16-2011 11:34 AM

im going to self it right now! see what i end up with.

cody- that would be an uinteresting cross. never heard a neo crossed with a phal though. technically they are both vandaceaous

They could be crossed, but due to chromosome numbers, the progeny would most likely be sterile. I would love to do some far flung intergenerics within the subtribe Aeridinae (Phalaenopsis, Vandas, Arachnis, Neofinetia, Trichoglottis, and Aerides, to name a few out of the 108 genera within this subtribe).

Call_Me_Bob 07-16-2011 11:52 AM

a phalxtricho cross would be cool too.

FairyInTheFlowers 07-16-2011 12:15 PM

I am thinking of doing that when I get my Tricho to bloom once I get it. The question is, though, what Phal would I use?

Call_Me_Bob 07-16-2011 12:18 PM

thats a tough one! idk any of them would be cool

FairyInTheFlowers 07-16-2011 02:11 PM

I am hoping that my Phal. venosa blooms at the same time, as I think that would be neat, otherwise, I will need a pollen donor!

Variegation is typically caused by mutations in plastid DNA (more specifically, in the chloroplasts). this means that the mutation is passed on from the seed parent 100% of the time. Variegation in the pollen parent is not passed on.
Other types of mutations, which affect nuclear DNA, have a 50-50 chance of being passed on from either parent.

Call_Me_Bob 07-16-2011 02:31 PM

cool!

i selfed it today so we will see if it even takes
