D. cuthbertsonii bicolor
This is probably my favorite orchid, though Soph. coccinea runs a very close second. This clone came from Mountain Orchids and is blooming for the first time with three flowers and two buds:

awesome! I have the same plant from the same vendor and it's one of my favorites as well.
Have you seen the picture on the web of one of those that's basically a ball of flowers? Amazing. |
I have seen the picture and it is amazing. Great plant and flowers and hope to see some pictures of yours.
I just love this one!
how does it like to grow? |
Thanks for looking and commenting, WhiteRabbit. It's cool growing. I grow it as close to the lights as I can (4 HO fluorescent bulbs), keep it moist and as cool as possible. It's in a small clay pot in sphagnum at the moment.
Love it!!!!
Thanks, Jonada.
Let me know when you get tired of it.
I will! Actually the flowers last so long that I do get a little tired of them.
Ok, rub it in. Are you tired of it yet? How about now???
LOL :) :) |
If you ever get tired of the blooms, you can always send it to me! LOL...
BTW, it looks like you have another bud there that has yet to open in the front between the front two blooms! Congrats! I'm still waiting on mine to open that first bud. It's there, and I see color forming so I know it's getting close. I'm chomping at the bits! |
Looks like I'll have to divide it when I tire of it. Yes, Paul, it has another two buds opening.
That's fantastic! Thanks for sharing! This is one of those plants that's been in the back of my mind while I wonder if I have the conditions to grow it. Do you have any problems keeping it cool?
It's so nice having access to fellow growers in the Northwest! :) |
I don't have too much trouble - it's in a basement room, which remains relatively cool year around and we open windows early and close them as it warms up to keep the basement as cool as possible. It seems a bit more temeprature tolerant when groiwn under the highest possible light - still cool growing but a bit more amenable.
Thanks for the info! I don't have a basement, but we do the same with our windows and our house stays fairly cool. One room can get up to 80F if it's really hot outside, but the rest of the house stays under 75F.
I grow mine (I have two of these beauties) at 75F but to compensate for the heat I have them in wet sphag in net pots with a fan blowing on them to provide evaporative cooling.

I used to have one years ago, and I had good success keeping it cool. I had it in a clay pot in sphag, which I set in to another clay pot will clay balls in the bottom. I set this inside a glass bowl, and put a little water in the bottom of the bowl. The evaporation works great! Do you always use rain water for yours? |
Here in the Pacific northwest we don't have to use rainwater. Our ordinary water is so good that we don't have to do anything to it.
I use R/O water

Maybe it's time that I tried another Cuthbertsonii! But the only practical place to grow it is the basement, and I prefer to have it where I can see it. How do you get reduced night temperatures if you grow them under lights? |

I guess that makes sense. I have my masd. in the basement on a window sill, with the window always cracked. It looks really happy, but still hasn't bloomed. Once it does, I'll bring it up stairs if it doesn't get too hot.
nice cuthberts :). let me ask? can a single plant have different colored blooms?
mountain orchids has a nice stock of variables on these I might add. they are catching on. I need a few more myself to fill out my hillside :) |
I don't think one plant can have different blooms, but if you take more than one plant and pot them together they will eventually form a single mat with different color flowers. I may do that with mine (I have two different ones)
Fishmommy is right, though flower color can vary a bit with temperature and light. Generally cooler temps and higher light produce darker colored flowers in reds and oranges.
These are so cute!
Thanks, Rosie.
I had missed this thread. That's a stunning plant and flowers! Blooms for 6 months.. WOW. Thanks for showing us Ron.
Cutie!
