I got this Den tetragonum as a travelling buddy for our Project 2 plant a few months ago. I couldn't seem to find it's happy place for a while but I found it now ;)

The second bloom opened within 30 minutes of the first one!

Wow Sue,
I love that little bloom, well.. how big is it really?

Hi Sue, I found this thread while searching for some more info on Den. tetragonum.... Can you give some more detils of where was this plant happiest?

Any details about growth/rest period/etc. would be very appreciated! Those flowers are gorgeous - I can only hope to make my plant so happy!

This is one of my absolute favorites...it's really different-looking :D

I finally found it's happy place on the top shelf of the rack directly under one of the skylights in the orchid room. Here, that means it gets pretty bright indirect light for most of the day and a few hours of very high light. It shouldn't be let to totally dry out so not a true winter rest, maybe just a slight reduction from Nov - Mar.

I looked it up in Orchidwiz and the information there varies:

Summer day temps 77 F and nights 60-63 F...mine gets much higher temps both day and night.

Winter day temps 62-68 F and nights 41-47 F...again, much higher in my room.

There is also a variation on suggested lighting. It says some Australian growers prefer 60% shade, some folks give it Phal lighting and still others say high light is the way to go (which is what mine seems to prefer).

What this tells me is that Den tetragonum is a very adaptable little 'chid

It may take some changes and moving it till you find it's happy place but you should have no problem growing it.

You are gonna LOVE it!

shakkai 09-30-2007 11:21 AM

I know I'm gonna love it - I just hope it loves me too!!

Thanks for the info on what you found your's liked. Thats a really big help. Mine is obviously going to be cooler than yours, but I will start off with a high light position and go from there if it doesn't look happy. Hopefully, I can look forward to flowers in the Spring!

Here is a photo of my plant, newly mounted... it didn't seem right in a pot.

Ross 09-30-2007 06:09 PM

You are TOTALLY right in that decision! I agree, it looks great this way.

shakkai 10-01-2007 03:12 AM

Thanks, Ross! I'm not sure the mount is big enough (but its what I had on hand....) and I've never mounted something with such a big mass of roots. Hopefully, it will enjoy the new 'home' and I'll get to enjoy some of its flowers soon. (Though really, I could grow this one just for its leaves and stems... I can see why its one of Sue's favourites.!)

Here's a photo, for comparison, of the plant as I received it in a pot:

You and your new baby are gonna be very happy :D

Toddybear 10-01-2007 07:35 PM

Beautiful! I'm tempted to get one!

cb977 10-01-2007 08:36 PM

Do it Todd...do it Todd...do it Todd

:iagree: Even without flowers, this is one pretty plant! And if both Sue and I can grow it, then it should grow for just about anyone as our conditions are so different....

(Though mine is new, so I can't claim to be able to grow it yet.... I'll be sure to let everyone know how its doing next spring or, of course, if I have any troubles with it - you guys are sure to be the first to know!)

shakkai 01-11-2008 04:57 PM

Thanks, Terri. When some of the other canes start to open with more buds on, you all will be seeing more pics!! I love this plant.

cb977 01-11-2008 05:42 PM

:bananaslide: Way to go, Shak!
Isn't this an awesome little guy?

By the way...over 40 buds! You're still killin' me! :faint:

shakkai 01-11-2008 05:50 PM

Oh, Oh, Oh.... I forgot to say - they smell wonderful!! Just like Coconut Body Butter from the Body Shop. :)

I can't wait until more flowers are open and the smell is even stronger. Last count there were 48 in total.

Shak, whatever you've done, you've done well!
Way to go! :bowing
