Which Is The Better Flower

1. Blc Keowee 'Mendenhall'
2. Blc Keowee 'Newberry' |
Huh? Is this a trick question? :scratchhead: They are both very beautiful! Very similar, but both beautiful! The color of the lip seems more intense with the Newberry, but I wouldn't throw either of them out with the wash, if you know what I mean.

I think I prefer the 'Mendenhall' over the 'Newberry'. The lip is a bit darker and offers better contrast to the petals & sepals. But like Kiki said...I wouldn't kick either one off the grow rack! :)
|
Well I tend toward the Mendenhall bloom seems smoother .. actually I like both of them :) Gin

Oooh, I like these. Personal preference = no wrong answer.
Looks like the petals on Mendenhall are fuller, but come on - we all know you get this orchid for the lip! I like the spotting on Newberry better. |
I realy like them both, but I think Mendenhall has what judges look for, the mirror image, both sides of the bloom are alike..... Jim.
|
I like them both. Such a problem having both and choosing a favorite.
|
Gorgeous, Jerry! Both are simply stunning, but I like the more clearly defined markings in the lip of the Newberry.

They are both fantastic. I looked at the Mendenhall first and thought Wow. Then opened the pic of the Newberry and the spotting on the lip just clinched it for me. |
Well, ladies and gentlemen the winner is 'Mendenhall' according to the judges. They gave it an AM and even though the flower on 'Newberry' is beautiful it has not been awarded.
|
Congrats on the award Jerry :clap::clap::clap:

CONGRATS... On the award. Just what I thought.....Jim.

Way to go Jerry!! That's awesome! :bowing

Hi Jerry,
I think that they are both beautiful...the photo of Mendenhall is a little blurry, so that threw me off a bit...also, the Newberry blooms are not photographed straight on like the Mendenhall bloom was... Having said all that, before reading your last comment, I was actually thinking that the Newberry blooms were nicer. Even though the petals aren't as wide, they seemed like they could be less recurved than the Mendenhall petals. Also, the lip looks nicer to me on the Newberry plant. :) That's my :twocents: worth. |
Congrats. on the award they are both beautiful but the Mendenhall blooms look ... peaceful :) Gin
|
Both are great!!!! DOUBLE CONGRATS!!!!
|
I wasn't going to vote for either one because looking at them just boggled my mind. :shock:They were both so beautiful! No way could I decide. I have finally been able to settle on the Newberry because I really like the lip. I wouldn't leave either one on my porch unattended though. They are just gorgeous. I am still gone on them both. :bowing:bowing I have a Newberry baby. Someday my bloom will come! Carol who is going back to real life now.

Hey hey! Congratulations, Jerry!
|
They are very close in quality, and the photos aren't taken from the same angle to the flower so it is impossible to judge them fairly. The 'Mendenhall' clone was probably awarded 20 years ago, and they probably didn't take the 'Newberry' clone in for judging.
The Carter and Holmes website mentions that "Mendenhall' is a larger flower so that is probably why it was awarded in comparison. |
