Have you tried -
Meyers Conservatory -

and
B & T World Seeds - Phalaenopsis parishii from B & T World Seeds
:D

Thank you Dorothy!

B & T don`t have Phals seeds in stock but thank you for the link...

I just sent an email to Troy Meyer asking if he sells orchid seeds but I think he only sells flasks... We`ll see...

thanks again

Claude

Hey Claude,

I may have a little around, but it's a little old and Phal seed is notrotiously short-lived. Plus lots of Phal growers like to sow from green pods. I will have a little soon. What did you have in mind?

Phalguy 02-16-2009 10:32 PM

Hello Royal!

because I`m always looking to perfect my sowing technique, I`m lacking seeds while waiting for the crosses I made to mature pods. :-)

This is why I`m looking for phals seeds. I would love to get species seeds but any Phal will do...

Let me know when you are going to have some....

Thanks

Claude

I shouldn't have said soon. I polleinated an equestris last month so it'll be some time. If you're just working on technique, would it have to be Phal seed?

Phalguy 02-16-2009 11:13 PM

I just love them....;-)... but I should say I`m totally crazy about phals!.... I`m mostly growing phal species ( A couple of oncidium and maxilara )and I have that thing about fragrant phals... ;-)

Hello!

I got and email from Troy meyer and they don`t sell seeds... When they have some extra, they send them to OSP...

so, back to square one... ;-) Still looking for phal seeds..... ( sigh ! )

Aw pooh! Claude :(

Bird Song Farm 02-19-2009 10:54 AM

I'd like to try pollinating a few phals but am ignorant of the procedure......no, that not right, I know the "how" it's the when I don't know.

Do you use:

A fresh, newly opend bloom?

A bloom that has been open for awhile?

A bloom that is just about gone.

I'll pass any pods that result on to anyone who wants them but first I have to "do the dirty"

Thanks,
Al

Hey Al,

I try to use the youngest and freshest flowers that are fully opened. A few days after opening is what I shoot for, but I've used flowers that have been open for weeks and got good results.

I don't know if there is any scientific basis for this, but I was taught that prime harvesting time for pollen is slightly later than prime receptiveness (new word) of the stigmatic surface. It makes sense to me that if pollen can be stored for long periods of time then it'd be ok to use pollen from a more mature flower. Similarly, I can see how a shallow "pool of jelly" of a stigma can have a short life. Long story short - I use pollen from a more mature flower, but put it on the stigma of the freshest fully opened flower I have.

Sounds perfectly logical to me Royal. I'll have a go at it and see what takes place. I need another experiment going on.
