Zygopetalum 'Conway's Choice'

The big smelly one has opened and right now it smells like spring hyacinths in my kitchen. Rather stange during the winter holiday season, but I don't mind.
This one ususally flowers about 3 times a year, and would probably flower more often if it got more water. They are fast growers, we have had this one for about 4 or 5 years and it has been divided in half once. I also have a backbulb which has been flowering for the last 2 years. Hope you like it, thanks for looking.

Spectacular!

Tindomul 12-26-2006 09:07 PM

WOW!!! That is amazing! I want one! What sort of growing conditions do these like? Can I put one in my kitchen that doesn't get much light?

Barbara 12-26-2006 09:50 PM

Thanks. The kitchen is pretty cool in the winter and hot in the summer with a south easterly orientation and lots of windows. Mine doesn't sit under the gro-lites and it does just fine. :D

Barbara, that's beautiful! I love the Zygos, but have the dickens keeping them alive. I have a NOID that actually bloomed for me this winter, I hope I can keep him alive through this summer.

I love it! I wish I had the space for one more orchid,as that would be a great addition!

esungirl 01-01-2007 03:34 PM

Very nice, it looks very happy.

Toddybear 01-01-2007 03:36 PM

I've got to get one of these! Flowering more than once a year makes it a winner for me!

Wendy 01-01-2007 11:00 PM

Thanks for all the wonderful comments. It does have one drawback however, it is pretty wide (about 21/2'). But you can put all your paphs around it and they think they're living in the jungle. :)

My Zygopetalum Granite Island is in spike now. I'm really happy. It's the second blooming for me.

Beautiful Barbara. I have one too, it gave me only one spike so far and with only two flowers. It has another new growth but seems to stop growing. I am in Southern Cali and we have a numbers of very cold day here, down to below 40 in Feb. It seems to stop growing when it was too cold. I don't know if I should water it weekly when it was too cold.

Wow, that's beautiful!

Very nice Barbara.

What media are you growing in? Looks like charcoal chunks with lots of holes in your pot........how about frequency of watering?

I've had 2, killed 2, but not deterred. My wife loves the scent of Hyacinths, so this be a great addition to my kitchen bay.

"My wife loves the scent of Hyacinths..."

Careful though - some zygos mix that smell with a subtle scent of Off Bug Spray. Mine does, but I still love it - so easy to grow

Hi Dave, it was growing in large pine bark chips (you know, like what they use on gardens:lol: ). We didn't have any regular bark mix on hand and the plant was suffering so that's what it went in. To my great surprise, it loved it. Only problem, this media dries out so fast that it needs water during the growing season almost daily. It was just repotted into the traditional fir/sponge rok/charcoal mix with some coconut for good measure, so I'm expecting (hoping:biggrin: ) it won't need as much water. They also seem to enjoy our humid climate, average humidity rage is between 50 and 90 percent! I'm also careful to water it during the day time, never at night. I also find that they don't like compacted media. It also seems to be a heavy feeder so it gets fert. at one quarter of the recommented strength every other time I water it during it's growing cycle. We now have 2 large plants, a smaller one and another backbulb. I must be crazy.

Barbara 04-06-2007 02:47 PM

Thanks for even more kind comments.

4page, are you growing yours outdoors? I would give it water only if it needs it. Also depends on air circulation, humidity levels, growing media. They do have psudobulbs so they have water storage capacity, so I wouldn't water if too much. I certainly hold back watering mine much when semi-dorment. The rest of the year is a different story!

I have a few Zygos, but they are all seedlings. I can't wait until they bloom.

smartie2000 04-09-2007 04:22 PM

That colour is spectacular Barbara!
