My orchidariums today, 23 Dec 2008, picture heavy......

First I start with my "nano" orchidarium. It is a terracotta tube inside a aquarium. I need to install a small fan.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r...rchidarium.jpg

Ny second orchidarium is a small aquarium.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r...rchidarium.jpg

The third is my master Orchidarium! As you see it starts to get crowded! :D

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r...rchidarium.jpg

And a crowded orchidarium meens that you can build a new one
So this is my new master orchidarium under construction with reference material!

Hi Magnus

I like the new orchidarium. What are you using this time; glass or acrylic? Just curious as I am still sorting out what I will use.

Holy cow! That's serious!

Jkelee 12-23-2008 03:33 PM

Holy Smokes!!! I'm drooling all over my desk now!
Awesome job Magnus!!!
I LOVE that 3rd one!!!
AND OF COURSE, the 4th One!!!

Magnus A 12-23-2008 04:50 PM

Thanks!

I have no possibility to take pictures now and it can be hard to describe the details. Hope you understand....

But this is the basic:
I have to admit that I found the frame for my new orchidarium second hand. It is a custom built terrarie but the back and the bottom was in very bad shape. The frame is built in standard aluminium profiles, the doors and front is glass. The top is glass and an aluminium mesh that I plan to change for polycarbonate (lexan), the mesh is shading the planned light!

The back wall is a composite built from styrofoam and MDF (medium density fiberboard). It is sealed and strengtend with glasfiber and epoxi resin and finaly painted with a two component polyuretane lacquer for marine applications. The bottom is MDF, also sealed with glasfiber and epoxi, and finaly painted with a light grey two component boat lacquer made for use under water.

Picture will come next year!

I will grow more or less everything I have in the new one. The same as in my "old" one. the condition in temperature will be intermediate to warm in summer and intermediate to cool in winter. I test whatever I can get my hands on but mainly miniature to extreme miniatures.

Growing hight is 140 cm and the bottom is 120*120 cm with a cut front corner (80*80cm)

Ross 01-05-2009 05:07 PM

You certainly understand you don't have an orchidarium (right?) You must have a 'chidarium, or a "tank" (that's my term) or something else. At least here in the US, (where we feel free to sue anyone anytime it suits us! Oops, I said Suit. That's a legal term right?) Sorry... I got off on a soapbox.

Magnus A 01-05-2009 05:30 PM

:) Ross

English is only my second language.....

It is an enclosure to grow orchid in and by the language rules I have learned in school you can create the word orchidarium.
But I found the company you probably refering to......... This is as if a company protects "orchid pot" which would be ridiculous.

I grow orchids , not selling cabinets, as non commercial grower I use orchidarium until they ask me not to. ;)

IF a protected brand has been so common that it defines all similar product the protection is lost, at least in Europe. Therefore there is no possibility to protect ordinary, obvius words as brand names.

If the company ask me to stop using "orchidarium" i will consider doing so!

Magnus A 12-16-2009 02:57 PM

I have been absent for quite some time from this forum. The latest year I have had some downs conserning my orchids and way to much to do at work. A not so good year for my hobby.

But here yuo have how my "new" cabinet looks today!

RenéeS 12-16-2009 03:28 PM

Magnus, that's quite spectacular!! I hope your orchids are doing well in there, you have so many in there!! How many orchids are you growing in your orchidarium?

Akhenaten 12-17-2009 12:06 PM

What is the light in you great orchidarium?
Do you orchidarium have not front side?

Agreen 12-19-2009 02:54 AM

VERY NICE, I especially like the large front for viewing. The corner design makes a large background surface for mounting. Thanks for showing this.

Magnus A 12-19-2009 03:23 PM

Renée, I think it is about 150-175 plants in the cabinet! And I have some more space in it ;) .

Akhenaten, I have fronts but i took them away to get a better picture without glares.
For the lights, 4*54W T5 6500K and 1*150W MH 5600K.

And Yes, I have a problem with heat build up, mainly during the warm summer month.

Akhenaten 12-20-2009 07:20 AM

Thank's. Nice light. Can you show photo of you fixtures?

Magnus A 12-20-2009 11:31 AM

Akhenaten, here you have closeups on the light! I plan to mount a fan to circulate more air around the light and maybe this will lower the temperature in the cabinet.

Very nice setup Magnus. That's a very clever light arrangement you have. Very good!

It looks like you use Ecoweb for your mounts? How do you like working with it?

Cheers.
Jim

Magnus A 12-20-2009 11:52 AM

Jim, Nope I do not use Ecoweb that is the cheap(?) copy of Epiweb.

I use Epiweb mainly becouse it is the origianal and not a copy, and it is what is sold in Europe!

and yes, I like it and so does my orchids!

DelawareJim 12-20-2009 12:09 PM

Magnus;

I'm sorry, I meant to say Epiweb but mis-typed Ecoweb. I know it's a Swedish company and the original so it should be readily available for you.

I've always been impressed with the pictures in their gallery and have been thinking about trying some for a while.

I've also been thinking about trying some as the back wall of one of my aquariums to grow some of my aquatic ferns and mosses on.

What size do you usually cut your mounts too?

Cheers.
Jim

Akhenaten 12-20-2009 12:23 PM

Thank you for photos :) You have a booming sophronitis!!! (on the photo with MH) I can't receive a blooming of my sophronitises. I think that they need cool temperatures, but you have a hot orchydarium. Take my congratulations!!!

How do you watering orchids?
And please say more about condition of you sophronitis grown: how do you often watering them, and what is the middle temperature?

Connie Star 12-20-2009 10:24 PM

Mycket fint!

Ranchnanny 12-20-2009 10:51 PM

Now that is really nice  I like it being in a corner saves on space. Fantastic.

Hi
Yes I have blooming Sophronitis in my cabinet :) . Acctually two, http://www.orchidboard.com/community...dunculata.html . Though I have been cheating a little as I have them on my balkony during the summer so they get some cold nights.

But those are S. brevipedunculata that seams to handle warm condition quite well. But they need LIGHT, Strong Light!

For watering I have a 8 liter (2 US gallon) spray bottle that I use twice or three times a week. I also have a ultrasound membrane humidifier under the false bottom in the cabinet with a 5 in. 12 V computer fan blowing the mist up into the growing compartment.

More questions?
/Magnus

Jim,

I have had a piece in an aquarium for about two years now, and it is populated quite nicely with ferns. As it is the original black material (made by the folks that make brown EcoWeb for me, but sold to me as Epiweb by Mikael Karlbom), it has taken a long time for the algae to take hold.

Akhenaten 12-25-2009 10:13 AM

Magnus A Thank you for answer :)
My Sophronitis brevipedunculata have enough light, but they have troubles with watering and roots.
You Sophronitis brevipedunculata very well :)

Magnus A 12-29-2009 06:23 AM

Akhenaten, I have also had problems with rots but mainly on the coccinea and wittigiana. I have been overwater mine when they started their restingperiod. There is sometimes hard to see when the resting period starts!
For roots I have found that Sophronitis just love Epiweb. The roots shoots into the material and are well protected inside.
