A first flowering for this Phragmi. bought last winter. It is cultivated in a substrate made of 50/50 middle sized bark and CHC + a little charcoal.

It has a wonderful color, it has everything.

quiltingwacko 02-11-2009 02:08 PM

I see more phrag addicts on the horizon. Good, I'd hate to be alone.

Watering?

I don´t know what I´m doing wring with mine. I´m getting brown leaftips. Is it to little water? I have watered it twice a week.

dragom 02-13-2009 06:51 AM

I have one being shipped to me next week. It will be another learning experience for me. Now the big challenge is to not kill it.

Spider, I think the brown leaf tips may be caused by iron or some other mineral in the water. I have a phrag that also has brown leaftips, but it blooms and seems happy so I'm ok with it. I also don't show any orchids so I'm not as concerned.

quiltingwacko 02-13-2009 11:58 AM

Phrags have to have good water. There must be something in the water that it is sensitive to. I don't know a great deal about water but I do know that. Perhaps watering by soaking or draining it in a sink. There is even distilled though that is controversial. Isn't everything with orchids? The more books I read, the more I think that. Carol

I have an orchid with brown leaf tips. Discovered that it is sending roots down into the humidity tray below. Tray water has colloidal silver in it to keep nasties from growing in the water. Maybe keep my chid from growing too! It's always something.....

Phrag watering

I use only RO water. The plant stands in a mixture of bark, fresch Spagnum and red vulcantic rock. Can it be Iron in the vulcanc rock?

quiltingwacko 02-13-2009 02:17 PM

OrchidMania: Cultivation of Orchids This site talks a lot about water. Perhaps it will help you.

quiltingwacko 02-13-2009 03:17 PM

It may be something in your water or the rock. I think it most likely that it is the water.

Spider 02-13-2009 07:37 PM

Red lava rock

I wonder if it could be the lava red lava rock. The red color indicates iron. I can´t forget when my grandfather showed me a piece, not litte and not large but rather red. Maybe I should have rinced the pebbles more. I do not think it is the water as it is foltered already. Maybebe I should gibe the plant a realy good rince? :(

quiltingwacko 02-14-2009 12:24 AM

Probably a good idea. Volcanic rock can have iron in it. I do not know if this would harm your phrag. A rinse cannot hurt and phrags love to be wet. :goodluck::crossfing

Ranchnanny 02-14-2009 01:01 AM

The color is wonderful and Phrags are sure growing on me more and more.

Me too Sheridan. I think I may become a phrag addict. When I saw a spike yesterday, I was over the moon! I must be doing something right. My phrags are my faves. Carol
