Cattleya walkeriana

I had three buds on this, but temperatures near 39ºF (4Cº) blasted two - and several other buds, including four buds on three different walkerianas:( ). Anyway, the shape is reasonable and, as always, the perfume is fantastic.

Bummer about the bud blast but the color on this one is so vibrant! Very nice!

Don Perusse 07-07-2008 10:07 PM

Sorry about the bud blast....That's why we grow orchids for their flowers. At least they didn't ALL blast. I've had some that did! Still a beauty.

Mauro, that looks like a pretty small plant. Am I correct? Would this be a good candidate for a window area with limited space? Great photos, as always.

4°C !! that seem pretty cold for your location, in fact it is the maximum cooler temp for safe food storage (0-4°C). Is that how you always get such crisp pictures.

Your picture is very stunning - I could almost smell the fragrance!

Great form, Mauro....love the lip, too!

Ross, I'd say that yes, it is a good candidate for a window. For you to have a better idea, this particular plant is 13cm high and 11 cm long (four pseudo bulbs). It is true that some plants of this species can be a little higher than this, but not much more.

Dave, winter nights are cold here where I have my grh (940m above the sea level); these very low temps generally occurs in the dawn and for a few hours only, but are enough to cause serious damages to buds. Cold waves coming from the South Pole hit my area with intensity during the winter months. Higher areas in my State can easily reach temps as low as 4ºC negative.

Oh my! :whew
That is just lovely, Mauro!

Walkeriana is one that I do not yet have in the collection. With this particular species, I want to be able to see the actual bloom on the plant when I buy it. There seems to be a very large number of varieties around and I want one that makes me go :yikes:

Thanks for sharing yours...it gives me hope for finding that "perfect" one :bowing

Tindo, walkerianas are a problem; when you start with them there's no return!
