Chubidubi,

In response to your signature, I feel that I need drugs because I have orchids. Thanks for all the kind remarks everyone!

Dekejis 05-19-2008 04:07 PM

Ooooh. I have envy..
It's gorgeous!

Sorry to be the harbinger of bad news but I do not think that your plant is Bulbophyllum makoyanum. I think that it is Bulbophyllum flabelloveneris aka Cirrhopetalum lepidum. Check it out and let us know your verdict. But as Shakespeare (never could spell his name properly!) said "A rose by any other name would small as sweet". It still remains a pretty orchid and I hope it brings you lots of joy.
Keep well and kind regards
Mike

they are so similar! i think the label of makayanum is correct because the individual leaves are longer and the shape of the interior a bit more vertical. i am attaching two images from the web. what do you think? (the makayanum is first, lepidum second)

Mike O'C 05-24-2008 03:25 AM

Thanks for that M & F. I have a mental image of a photo of Bulbophyllum makoyanum that I have seen somewhere in one of my books. If I can find it (off line) I will post a reference to it and you can see that it looks very different.

Mike O'C 05-24-2008 07:03 AM

I have found the book in which I saw the photo of Cirrhopetalum makoyanum.
The book is called "A to Z of South East Asian Orchid Species" by Peter O'Byrne ISBN 981-04-4479-6 Published by the Orchid Society of South East Asia, Singapore September 2001. A nice book if you are looking for a Christmas present from somebody (Start dropping hints now!). There is also a very good line drawing of the plant and flower in "The Orchids of Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore" by Seidenfaden and Wood.
Both your photos look nothing like the illustrations in the books mentioned above. See if you can locate the books and compare. Your paler flowered plant in your thumbnails might be Cirrhopetalum Daisy Chain which is a makoyanum hybrid. Let us know what you think

M+F....How are you growing this guy, if I might ask? In an orchidarium of some kind, under lights, windowsill?? Am curious because I see you're in NYC...I'm in Brooklyn and just love the Cirrhos but don't have any.

Yet...

It is in my bathroom, which has a west facing window. There is a small fan in there as well.

Hi M&F and others. I was at an orchid society meeting last night and one of the members brought along his plant of Bulbophyllum makoyanum. I think that I persuaded him to subscribe to Orchid Board and to post his photo(s) of his plant so that you can see what Builbophyllum makoyanum looks like. If he does not I will ask if I can post his pictures so that you can see what the true Bulbophyllum makoyanum looks like.
Until then
Mike

Hi M&F. Hennie Steyn has posted his photos of Bulbophyllum makoyanum. They are to be seen in the GALLERY under RECENT PHOTOS. Go take a look. both the thumbnails thta you attached to your post are in fact Bulbophyllum flabelloveneris or what we used to call Cirrhopetalum lepidum. Would be interest to hear what you think once you have seen Hennie's photos
Keep well and kind regards
Mike
