I don't think I've seen one that open and wide! Do you know the parents? It's beautiful!

nice one. dolosa is considered loddigesii x walkeriana by the RHS but I think some suspect a hybrid swarm in nature. wild-collected dolosa are probably some combination of these two species, but I wouldn't bank on a straight up 50/50 genetic makeup

I would refine that to say wild hybrids between the two species are known (called x dolosa), but I haven't ever heard it called a hybrid swarm, which denotes many species involved (think Encyclia). The artificial hybrid is called Cattleya Heathii, so the correct name on this one would be determined by who made it: nature or a person with a toothpick.

technically Heathii is harrisoniana x walk. Dolosa is the primary hybrid loddigesii x walk.

Heathii appears to be harrisoniana x walkeriana in RHS, which is news to me. I've never heard of this since in practice, it's always the artificial hybrid of loddigesii x walkeriana.

I have to admit, I don't know why this discrepancy exists. Still, x dolosa is only for the natural hybrid, not the artificial one.

I recall what you said, I think they split off harrisoniana "officially". The old Brabantiae (loddigesii x aclandiae) made with 'Streeter's Choice' are now considered Olenus (if one agrees that this variety is actually harrisoniana)

You guys are making my head spin with all the talk about parent identification, naming conventions, etc. HA! Even so, I truly appreciate the discussion as I am learning so much about my species orchids and primary hybrids.

My C. dolosa was tagged as (Cattleya loddigesii × Cattleya walkeriana) var. alba and is not nearly as old as Peter's stunning specimen. Here she is in bloom this past spring season.
