Watering problem
 

So I have started watering in buckets. My largest Phal is so big I cant fit it in a bucket (leaves to long). Am I supposed to take the orchid out of the pots when I put them in the bucket? Or just stick the pots untouched with the orchid inside for watering? I wanted to roots to dry off a bit thats why I took them out of their pots last time. Any advice? Any is greatfully appreciated :)

This is probably a common problem. I just use a large, shallow, plastic storage box (the kind that comeswith a lid) and it works well. Just gets kind of heavy to transport the left over water. It makes things easier to set it up in the yard so when your through all you have to do is tilt and dump.

For phals I would just run them in the kitchen sink--or bathtub. Flush it out and shake it up and down a bit to get the water out (but not hard). No bucket needed!

I use a 5-gallon drywall bucket and even 12" pots fit just fine.

I use the sink method as well. I can fit both my phals in the sink together if they need a soak, its also handy for fertilizing.

Look at my collection my picture in the breaking the ice forum, its HUGE. The leaves extend 12" out on each side.

So I should not take the roots out of the pot ( bt they are so fun to look at :) haha

My biggest Phal http://www.orchidboard.com/community...bs/DSC2667.jpg is nearly that wide at 20"+ and I can dunk it just fine. I don't see why you have a problem? Maybe we don't understand the situation. How big is the bucket? How big the pot? Why do you feel you must take the plant out of the pot? I think I'm missing something here. A 5-gallon drywall pail is almost 12" across the top. A plant in a 12" pot is certainly a biggy, to be sure.

WAIT. You aren't trying to water the leaves are you? Just the roots should be watered.

Here's a pic of a brassia I had getting watered in a bucket. Note it's just the pot and medium that were in the water. I started doing it in the sink shortly after this because it was a LOT easier.
