Someone mentioned using the produce bags that onions or other vegetables come in instead of the net pots.
How has that worked out for people. Would you recommend it for Phals?

Well...yes...and no. I usually put some in the bottom for drainage, but, recently I potted a Bulbophyllum in one. It's in moss ( how do you keep moss from turning green)and setting in a little round Rubbermaid container. The problem is that it's soft, there's nothing to corral the plant or keep it upright. Maybe someone else has an idea, I'm all ears.

You could use a plastic 2l soda bottle cut in half.

I use those bags as liner for plastic or wood baskets, to keep the bark from falling through the holes. I suppose the basket could be skipped, but then the top would have to probably be tied at the top, just under the leaves, to keep the media confined. If necessary I sometimes tie the mesh bag to the basket at several points around the rim to keep the thing open to the width of the basket.

While the soft net bags should work in theory, they fail in terms of plant stability.

Orchids that are loose in a pot do not do well:
  • We use pot clips to stabilize plants till they grow enough new roots.
  • We tie plants to mounts.
