Cattleya repotting question Male
Default Cattleya repotting question

1 of my 1st 2 cattleyas, both purchased in the last 2 months. C. lueddemanniana var. tipo 'Hayde' AM/SVCN x 'Sian#2', finished blooming about a month ago, about 7 new growths are starting to "bulge" out at the base of various pseudobulbs. I know the typical importance of waiting for new roots to emerge, or existing to start growing again. I've read in various places, that some cattleyas are better off being repotted, at the sight of new growths, or just before the new roots emerge. Is there truth to this? Does it depend on the type of cattleya that it Is? Depend more on my growing environment (I've done well with phals and a handful of oncidium types indoors here in MI, raising a few others from seedling size). I have red lava rock and med orchid bark, which seem to be pretty most commonly used, amongst a host of other potting media's available. I've been doing my homework when I can, info is overwhelming at times. It is currently in med bark, pretty root bound, roots wrapping around the top look to be in nice shape. What little I can see in the 1 hole in the bottom of the pot, definitely some dead ones. I know it will be soon, just want to give her the best chance I can, sooooo just before roots emerge, or just after?

For Cattleya species, the best information source is the Chadwick & Son Orchids Web page.

Go to their Web page and enter lueddemanniana in the search box. The first article listed has extremely detailed information on the plant's history in cultivation, and how to grow it. It may make growths twice per year, as yours is. I would wait to repot until new roots are forming - yours should be doing so quite soon.
