I leave partial roots on and just clear away the rotted part. They can sometimes seal up and branch out, at least I have observed this in some of my plants.

Thanks, I was hoping that would be the case about the roots. I suspected maybe so, as I can recall when repotting a few others that I have observed what looked like roots branching off from other roots, like some kind of appendage. I will go easy on watering for a while, to give the roots I had to cut a chance to heal and to encourage them to grow.
