Repotting cut orchids
Default Repotting cut orchids

Hi peeps

Sorry to be that annoying new person of the day, but where better to find advice than from a forum of people with more experience than me...

I ordered some Cymbidium Orchids for my partner today, and thought they were potted, but cut ones arrived. I need to find out if this was my mistake or theirs.

Anyway, am more into Cacti myself, but I know all plants are so different, so my knowledge may be usless here. I was just wondering if we could possibly pot the cut orchids to allow them to take root, or are they now just in the slow waiting room for death?

Hope someone can help. Thanks in advance!

Sorry, but no.

Some inflorescences can be cut into segments and can take root (thinking phaius), but most orchids are not like that.

You are not annoying in fact you caught my attention by your title: "Repotting cut orchids" = there are some orchids that grow from cuttings like most terette Vandas but are you sure it is a Cymbidium?
Cyms are sold as bare root bulbs (un-potted) to save on mailing costs; but I have never heard of selling them in 'cut ones' as you described.
Pictures would help us advice you better.

They were ordered online from a florist for Valentines. I was stupid and thought they were potted, but they arrived as cut stems in a vase...

I was wondering if we could pot them from this stage

You received the cut flower stems/spikes - like cut roses.

Cut Cym blooms can be very long lasting!

I don't know about your area, but in many places it is easy to find inexpensive potted, blooming Cyms at this time of year, if you are interested - supermarkets, home improvement stores, warehouse stores ...

I may look into that, but at the moment it's jst a way of trying to keep these actual ones going, rather than watching them die and go in the bin

Treat them as you would other cut flowers. Cut bottoms if stems at an angle - place in a vase with tepid water

I found a site with instructions here http://www.beautifulorchids.com/orch...t/cutcare.html

I'd check with the florist regarding any mix-up or confusion about what you ordered / were expecting
