Adding Holes to Plastic Pots

Hello All!

I am a chronic root rotter, and I'm always looking for ways to help get more air flow to my phal roots. Recently, I watched a video by Miss Orchid Girl on Youtube on adding extra ventilation to plastic pots. Her idea is sheer genius!

She burns holes into her pots, instead of trying to cut them (I've done that to some, which works but can be annoying). I decided to try it out with my new phals I got for Christmas, and I'm quite pleased with the results.

I also make the holes, I recently got hold of my husbands soldering iron and used that to make the holes - it is so easy and makes nice size holes :-)
By the way, i am a huge fan of miss orchid girl - her vids are great. Happy growing

I just use a cordless drill ...no fumes to deal with...Jean

Bigger holes in the side at the bottom of the pot are better. Using an electric soldering iron is easier. I've done it for many years.
Or for plastic pots with a suitable material take a quick-helix drill, one of the kind that is used to drill a hole for the antenna into the sheet of a car.

Using a soldering iron is fine, a great idea actually, but as one person has already hinted, do this with proper ventilation. I don't have proof that those fumes are harmful (buy they are certainly stinky). If you can, do this outdoors or in a garage.

Using a drill is fine too.

My husband said next time he would use his soldering iron, I think it will work better. These holes are a little smaller than I would like, but they'll do for now

I also us a soldering iron. I also use it to make holes for my s/h pots. If you want the holes bigger, just wiggle the soldering iron around. I even do slits this way.
