Life after water culture?! Female
Default Life after water culture?!

Hello everyone. One of my orchids was in really bad shape. No healthy roots and basically ready to kick the bucket. In hopes of saving i tried water culture. It has been a great success! New roots and leafs. My question is when should I pot into bark? Right now the roots r very small so should i let them continue to grow?

There is a picture attached. Thank you all

Generally the rule is if you have one root then let it get to about 3 inches long but if you have three roots then let them get to one inch long before replanting in to bark. I would let them get about another inch longer then repot in bark. Well done and good luck!

I didn't know you could do THAT!!! Really? Anyone else ever try this?

From what I understand....Orchids grow different types of roots depending on conditions. In other words, there are roots for climbing...roots that take in water when subjected to spray. Those roots were stimulated by large amounts of moisture so I would go with S/H too. I think your chances will be better and your plant healthier in the long run. Plus less stressed.

I'm too - very impressed!
I tried water culture but it didn't work. The water would sip up the stem and eventually cause stem rot.

When I grew roots via sphag-n-bag method, I too was really concerned about the transplant shock. Someone advised to make a very gradual transition taking one week a time.
So yeah, transferring from water to the other side of the world..... perhaps, S/H or very wet sphag could help.
I'm just guessing. Sorry, no experience.

Good luck and keep us posted!

I know we've had members grow some types of orchids in water culture ... A board search for "water culture" could offer insight.
