Pot or Mount for Den Yellow Chinsai? Female
Default Pot or Mount for Den Yellow Chinsai?

I have a 2 inch pot of Den Yellow Chinsai ‘Little Joe ‘. This is a keiki of a parent that died. It is planted in bark. It does bloom annually, but not with great vigor. It seems less than perfectly happy in its little pot. Judging from its growth pattern, I am wondering if it would do better mounted. Anyone have an opinion?

I believe this is a nobile type ? You could try it mounted. Remember that nobiles like to remain moist (except for the winter rest period). And if mounted, will you have somewhere to put it? (Canes can be long, and as you have probably noticed, want to grow pendulously, or every which way).

How are you currently growing it? (Media, light, water, temps)

If in a pot, canes can be staked early to keep them growing reasonable straight. Another option is to hang the pot (or basket), and let them grow however they choose.

Just a thought. You could wire them with copper wire like bonsai artists do and create a nice abstract display. It doesn't look like a promising candidate for mounting unless you have room for a large hanging plant or stand. Staking is also a good option. Larger pot with a lattice of some kind where the canes can be tied. I like the wired idea but that is just my artistic abstract vision. Interesting challenge. Let's talk. Wiring is easy. I'm doing it to phals right now. or phal flower spikes to get a different presentation of the flowers. Here. Sorry, thought I had a better picture of the outcome. Just wanted to get the flowers in the front of the pot and plant instead of high above. Some of them I have hanging down lower than the pot to put on a high shelf and be at eye level. Anyway, just an idea. Here is a discription as best as I can draw it. The idea is to have the phal on a high shelf and then flowers hang down in a curve to eye level and close to the pot/shelf displaying the flower much more than the plant. Anyway justn a thought. Plant den in a slightly larger pot and train it in a recumbent fashion. Light a water sprinkler or fountain. Ok so I can't draw. And I'm full of screwy ideas. Ok. Ok.
