re-potting cymbidium
Default re-potting cymbidium

I got a cymbidium orchid about a month ago and it is in full bloom and I was wondering if now is a good time for re-potting , some of the leaves are beginning to turn brown at the end points is that a bad sign ?!

You sometimes get brown leaf tips on cyms so I wouldn't worry to much.

They are quite happy pot bound, and healthy plants seem to fill pots pretty quickly. They do like well draining medium though so make sure water is draining through well.

I would leave it while it has flowers, but re-pot seeon after to give it the whole growing season over the summer to grow new roots.

When you repot, if the pot is full of roots the advice is to remove the bottom 1/3, this helps encorage new root growth and is another reason to do this in the spring so that new roots grow to replace them.

I would advise getting a good medium from a specialise orchid nursary or supplier. www.repotme.com is meant to be good.

Yes I have grown in Southern California (Carona) but the calif mixes didnt work at all for me in Florida due to the wet conditions we have. I use 100% stalite gravel with a little crushed sea shell here. I would add CHC too it (about 25%) if I lived in Calif. The gravel doesnt rot and take the roots with it.

I'm in SF bay area - I grow cyms in fir bark mix - fine and medium bark, perlite, pumice, bit of charcoal, some styro pnuts chc (coconut husk chips) are a good option too - I just use bark as it's easier for me to get
