post-repot Bulbophyllum vaginatum
I got the plant a while back and popped it into a little bonsai pot. Fast-forward to now and, well, it got a little bigger. The pot was elevated to give room for growths to hang, but my living room isn't a greenhouse so I figured it was time for a better solution.
I moved the plant onto a wide 14 inch drainage tray yesterday. The media is the same as was in the bonsai pot, classic orchiata and pumice covered by sphagnum, essentially the same as what I bought it in. I removed plant & media from the bonsai pot, placed it on the tray, and filled the new media around it, leaving all the old media intact. I lifted the aerial roots while adding the new media so they are not buried, but sitting atop or slightly poking into the new sphagnum.
For the moment, I've left a slight gap between the sphagnum and the tray's edge. My thought is that this will allow more air into the bark & pumice below (the tray has no drainage holes). Is that necessary, or might it be better fill in completely with sphagnum?
Also, is it worth trying to replace the bit of old sphagnum? I recall it being tedious and potentially root-damaging to replace the first time. Now, there is even more plant in the way.
