Default Great thread

Although I am really new to keeping orchids,(decided on this after retiring). I have in the past spent much time with aquaria and understand the importance of substrate and invironment with raising and breeding anything that lives. There is nothing more important. My last aquarium was a 350 gal saltwater. But it was a lot of work.

With regard to orchids - there are usually several "right answers" to "what medium shall I use?" Work backwards from WHAT you're trying to accomplish - How much moisture does the plant want and for how long - constant or wet-dry? how often do you water? Factor in temperature and humidity in your growing area. Then you can look a the HOW to accomplish that. Choice of medium, pot or basket or mount - choices driven by the goal you're trying to achieve.

Going back to what Ray wrote, a very experienced grower taught me a well-grown orchid should outgrow its container within 2 years. This will lead to fresh medium when you repot. So, focus more on improving growing conditions, and don't worry so much about the exact medium.
