Default Microfiber collar?

I've heard about the "collar" technique from some Orchid Societies in which you basically make a Sphagnum collar around the base of the plant to foster root growth. I stumbled upon this Vietnamese youtube channel which shared a tutorial to foster root growth in rootless orchids:

He attaches the rootless orchid to a stake with zip ties, then ties a microfiber string around the base, places it in a cup of water with the plant standing above the water but not touching it, while the microfiber goes all the way to the reservoir and wicks the water up.

I've seen the microfiber trick as a self watering hack, especially for vacation periods. But has anyone tried something like a microfiber collar to foster root growth?

I haven't seen this. I think success would depend on ambient growing conditions.

Check out Ninja Orchids on Youtube.
Nina uses microfiber a lot. Around the base, around a single root, running through the media.

I don't know if the microfiber helps... if there are no roots then at best it might enhance humidity but wouldn't help hydrate the plant. But it (or wires or similar things) can help to stabilize a rootless plant, very important so that newly-emerging roots don't get damaged by wobbling. Another reason to leave the "core" of bad roots attached to the plant just to help stabilize it as the new roots develop.

I’m with Roberta on this one.

The microfiber adds nothing to enhance rooting, in the plant’s current condition. The high humidity of the container is good, all by itself.

I suppose the localize moisture might be a help once roots emerge, but it seems to me you could accomplish the same - or better - by simply potting the thing up in moist potting medium and maintaining the humidity around it to keep it that way.
