Is This Maxillaria Tenuifolia Potted too High? Female
Default Is This Maxillaria Tenuifolia Potted too High?

Hello Orchid Board. I received my very first Max Ten 'compacta' 2 months ago and REALLY, REALLY want it to eventually bloom due to the fragrance.

About 6 weeks ago, I repotted it from the original pot into spagh topped off with Orchiata to retain moisture. I had to repot it a little high to avoid completely burying a small pbulb on one side. Now the largest clump of pbulbs has grown straight up about an inch and little roots are hanging in the air and getting dry.

It is on screened porch with high but not direct light with high humidity. However, in a few weeks I will need to bring it inside where humidity will not be as high.

Should I repot it lower? (That would bury the little pbulb.) Or, do I need to begin spraying the little roots on a daily basis (say no please)? Should I mound a little spagh up over the tiny roots? Any other suggestions?

I want to save this plant! Thanks for any and all guidance.

That's just how they grow. It's also sending roots under the dry rhizome sheaths into the medium. Never remove those papery sheaths. Keep the plant well watered and it should be fine. They grow much better in higher humidity.

I would also leave it as it is. This orchid grows like a weed anyway, so even if the potting situation isn't perfect, it will quickly make up for it. I've found that even 'average' home humidity is more than enough for it (mine is usually in the 40-50% range). I see you have a "compacta" form, I'm curious how compact your plant will be! I have the standard species, and it has become an unruly monster.
