I finally got all of the materials for this today so I was itching to get one assembled! It wasn't too bad, spent more time chopping up sphagnum than anything. 😅

I learned that working with fish line is not the most fun, especially at night with lighting challenges lol. I am a little concerned that the inside pot is not as big as needed but I'll keep an eye on that. I had tested one of the pots and it seems like they let the water off very gradually so that's a positive at least.

Sheet moss is really cool stuff! I've got enough to make a lot of logs though, I may have to figure out a hanging system in my house if I decide to make a few or more.

I think it turned out pretty good, may try to do some trimming to clean it up a bit but not bad for a first try.

Now just need to figure out what to attach!

WOW that looks awesome! The last of my materials is scheduled to arrive today, so hopefully I can try making one tomorrow! Your pots are nice and straight, I'm trying to remember if mine are that shape or more tapered (I might end up with a Jungle Blob instead of a Jungle Log!).

I already have the plants (which is why I got interested in the logs, I want to try to keep them alive!). I've got two Masdies and two Tolumnias, my plan is to put Tolumnia at the top (slightly drier), Masdie at the bottom (slightly damper). Fingers crossed! Let me know what you decide to mount!

Gosh farley, that's looks like a pro job! You may develop a side business from that.

PS I find braided fishing line easier... you might try a spool one of these days.

My pots have a slight taper, but the moss is so thick that I don't think I could tie it down tight enough to see it! I've got some den seedlings that aren't super happy with their current arrangement so I'm thinking I'll attach a few of them at various spots. I've got another project I'm working on so I'll see if I can get to the mounting today. Good luck with yours!

Ha! Sounds like something I could maybe try... 🤔 Or I could see if Orchids Limited wants to outsource their jungle log assembly!

Noted, I have to make a trip to the store today, I'll see what they've got.

I've started on mine (still awaiting fishing line! I think I ordered braided?). Here's the intermediate steps! I'm using a terracotta watering stake inside of two 4" Ultimate Orchid Baskets. I thought that the stake would fit vertically, but it didn't, so I cut out a little bit of plastic at the bottom of the bottom pot so it sticks out a little. Also, I didn't have success with filling it with sponge rock and sphagnum and then sandwiching the two halves together (I think because my terracotta stick went through both halves) so I cut little access holes and filled the top half from there. I'll cover it with moss later, but for now I'm doing a drip-test to see how quickly the water flows through. Updates later!

Ok, two Jungle Logs completed! My moss isn't very neat (not as pretty as farley's!) but they seem to be working! (And by working, I mean that they are moist and I stuck plants to them!)

Both my logs are pretty small. I've included some pics, as well as an overall of the growing area. They have small computer fans creating a nice little breeze, and I'm planning on misting them in the mornings and then filling the terracotta watering stakes every few days (as they get low). I've mounted a Masdie and a Tolumnia on each (Masdie on the bottom, Tolumnia on top). They all looked pretty good going on, with some new roots/growths happening, so here's hoping that they adjust well! I'm going to spray them with some KelpMax later!

Thanks! I'm unreasonably excited!

So far the growth of the orchid area has mostly been encouraged by my husband, but the jungle logs have a certain ... odor ... to them so I'm waiting to see how long until he mentions something. I think it smells like "plants" (ie, the smell of a nice moist greenhouse) but then again, I grew up with those smells so I find them nostalgic! We'll see what he thinks... (the growing area is our dining room! It gets the best light.)

Got around to mounting a few of my Dens today. I put 3 on this log, Den. New Burana, Den. Woo Leng Blue, and Den. Liberty White. 3 seedling size I got from Olympic Orchids on their $3 special.

Only 1 of them were doing well in the sphag they came in so I thought they would be a good tester for the first one.

Since I mounted 3 plants at approximately the same height, I realized I could have gotten away with way less fish line because I was wrapping over everything 3 times. Probably figure out a way to temp hold all and wrap all at once. Not that noticeable (unless you take a picture with wonky lighting!)

Moss smells a little fishy when wet, I'm sure that will diminish (hopefully!).

Pics of 2 of the plants, lighting is a bit of an issue with where I had to hang it for now.
