How do I repot this beast?
Default How do I repot this beast?

Hi!
So after this phal is done with his spike...he's due for a pot change. I'd say I'd wait for him to be in the growing phase to repot...but he seems to always be in the growing phase! Always, making leaves and spikes and ROOTS for days, lol! I swear when I repotted him last time, he was upright...but he's a lean-machine and now those roots are taking over. I swear I'm going to wake up and they're attached to my face, lol. Any advice on how to repot this guy would really be appreciated. I'm not a fan of cutting them...I understand I might have too but it hurts me to do it. He's worked hard for them and they are his lifeline and are huge!! Anyways, as always...thanks for the tips in advance!

Phals are pretty much always growing, so they are not picky about when they are repotted - can be repotted even when in bloom. It is possible that the media in the pot have broken down, and all of those air roots are looking for the fresh air they can't get in the pot. Don't cut those beautiful roots. You have a very healthy plant. If it were mine, I would unpot it, soak it for several hours or overnight to make the roots a little more flexible, then put in a pot into which you can get most of the roots. If some stay in the air, it's fine, clearly they like it there. Use fairly large bark. so that the pot drains well - a larger pot will tend to stay wet in the middle, which you don't want. One trick (especially if the middle of the plant doesn't have good roots) is to invert a small pot (or plastic basket) in the middle before you fill in the bark. That will keep an air pocket in the middle. When potting into one where it barely fits, you can twist it as you put in in the pot (think of it is screwing it into the space) If a root or two cracks in spite of your best efforts, not a big deal - what cracks is the velamin, the spongy outer "wrapping" - the core of the root will still be fine.

Also, I see in the picture that some roots have squeeze through the slits of the pot. You may be able to free them without breaking them if you cut the pot so that the slit can be opened wider. (A single-edge razor blade works pretty well on soft plastic pots like that, and fit into the space where it might be difficult to get a clipper) Again, if you break a few roots, there are plenty more, but save the ones that you can.

I agree...sacrifice the pot, not the roots.
