Default Masdevallia angulata advice please?

Hi. I ordered and got several bare root warm growing masdis from Andy's recent sale, but my main worry is the Angulata I got. Unbeknownst to me the roots seem very fragile, and the plant seems to be all broken up, a collection of One leaf or two with some roots in a bunch. My thought is that if they are brittle like this in nature, then they are able to bounce back, so I will be potting them up together as they are and hoping they pt out bunches of little side shoots. The leaves are very healthy, they are just a bunch of leaves with roots, and not a clear single plant. I am certainly not sending them back. During the packing and shipping process or by my unwrapping (unknown) the plant just fell apart. I feel that in some nice medium (right now only spagham moss, they will spring back fine.

So, from the viewpoint of another Masdie expert, is this correct?

I'm certainly no expert in anything orchid, but I ran into a similar situation with a Pleurothallis stricta, and just grouped them together the best I could and tied them down with fishing line. It worked out fine.

I would give Andy's a call or send an email and just ask what they recommend doing with it. I have contacted them before about stuff I have ordered and they are always very happy to help. They are extremely friendly. I am guessing that Andy's is rather accustomed to people tossing in a few impulse buys and then realizing they need a little help with the culture.

I am impulsive. I go to a vendor's site with the motive to buy one or two orchids that I have been wanting. Then I find a few more that look interesting....

Andy really knows his orchids and can give you some great pointers. He cares about the plants and the customers which is really nice.. He usually gives you a call and asks you how the plants are, etc.

My justification for paying 16$ shipping is to buy $100 in orchids.

Can I be bold enough to suggest researching the type of orchid you intend to buy before purchase. Then relate the purchase to the available conditions, I know not always practical and I can get quite impulsive at times and therefore come unstuck. I note your masdevilla according to Orchid Wiz can grow in cool conditions in fact, I have one doing quite well as a young plant at this stage. I tend to keep away from spagham moss as it reacts adversely with certain fertilizers. I use a very fine grade pine bark. Take care to also note the spikes tend to grow down on this plant.

Years ago I bought my first Masdevallia (veitchianna) and only afterwards realised it needed to grow cooler than it ever went in the house... so I bought a greenhouse... just for that one little Masdevallia! Hubby always laughs that I bought a greenhouse for one plant... but then he helped me build it so I know he didn't mind too much

Now I have lots of Masdies, and a greenhouse full of other orchids, and that first veitchianna got so big! I split it this year and couldn't get either half back in the pot it had been in just before. I now have two really big veitchianna
