I also have this plant and I find that the flowers emit a somewhat mushroom like scent but only when the flowers are fully open.

It wouldn't surprise me if the leaves act as an umbrella of sorts that provides shelter for mycohphilic flying insects. Some Dracula sort of do this with their downward facing blooms and water shedding floral structure.
