Masdevallia potting medium?
Default Masdevallia potting medium?

Hey all,

So, my Masd. Sunset Jaguar is here! And it is a huge, huge division (20+ growths) with 6 flower stalks! I am so happy I went with Mountain Orchids!

Anyhoo, it was sent to me in a mesh pot that it had obviously been in a while (also nice!) packed in sphag. So here is my question:

I am hesitant to pot things in sphag...I have everything in fir bark/sphag/charcoal/perlite mix, including my D. Lotax (although there is a wad of sphag around the D. lotax roots, and upon unpotting the other day, those roots were HAPPY!)

I have pure sphag, and also a fine bark mix that I could add sphag too. Is it likely that I will overwater a Masd. with sphag? Should I just pot it up in pure sphag? Seattle is a pretty darn humid place most of they year and I would hate to give this baby root rot.

All sphag, sphag and perlite or try coir and perlite. All will work. It depends on your environment. Keep moist, not soaking, good air movement a must.

Masdies are orchids that do very well in sphag since they really like moisture. I too am usually hesitant to pot things in sphag, but my masdie loves it.

Agreed, I don't grow in moss except for Masdies. They seem to love it and even my newest which I was worried about the roots on, now has a new root diving down in to the moss.

If its nice and moist in your area, then I would go with sphag simply because it won't dry out as quickly as it does, say here in NYC during the winter. Normally for me, anything in sphag is bone dry 4 hours after I water it. But I keep my masdies in a humid room and the sphag takes a few days to dry. Just water it, let it dry out, but not to the point where its crispy dry. And don't keep it soaking wet all the time. Ventilation should keep your orchids from rotting.
