Default Masdevallia herradurae

This was a VERY rewarding masdie. I used to have a lot of Masdies etc back when I had a 50 gallon cool tank setup. I'm going to post a few pics of the things I grew in it. This one only bloomed once a year but it was covered with cinnamon scented flowers for a month or two. It was warmth tolerant as well.

Nice one Wendy! I love that red color. It looks kinda big. How big is it?

That is amazing! I haven't seen one in person but your picture captures it beautifully!

I will be hunting for one of these.

Thanks. It's not a big plant but the flowers are a nice size. They open in among the leaves but usually they find their way to the edge of the pot....creates a nice show.

Wendy, do you still have your cool tank set up? I am thinking of making one myself so I could grow these cooler loving plants. Is there any place on the web I could get some information about it? Being in FL...hard to grow them here..LOL

Hi Wally. No I don't have my cool tank anymore. I was down with influenza last spring and while I was so sick it hit me how much work i had to do caring for both a warm/intermediate room and a cool tank. It was SO hard to get up and down those basement stairs and care for my plants. (I was really sick for a couple weeks) Since the cool tank was the most work i chose to sell off the plants and gave the tank to a friend. It was easy to set it up here in Canada as we have real winters....I had it vented via dryer exhaust hose to the outside. That let in just enough cold air to keep the tank cool. The lights would heat it up to ~68f in the day and it would fall into the mid-upper 40's at night. I also had a mist maker set on timer to come on 2-3x a day plus a fan running 24/7. I'm not sure how you could do that in Florida but maybe a small cooling unit would help. I'll let you know if i come across any info for you. I have pictures of my old setup on the computer if you would like to see them. Let me kknow and good luck with your tank.

Thanks Wendy, I know how it is when you get sick and can't take care of your plants like you want to. Two yrs ago, I had back surgery and I was not able to keep up with the vandas as much as I do now. I think I am going to come up with a cooling system for the tank. Even in the house during the summer, I keep the thermostat at 78 degrees but being in a tank, I would expect the temp in the tank would be higher.
