Dracula gigas
It's a monkey, isn't it? Or maybe a lion face? Draculas are neat flowers! They always have something extra to show you!
This is one of the few Dracula species which floral stem does not go down. On the contrary, it grows upward, as can be seen in one of the photos, and then, later, when the flower is completely developed its weight keeps the stem in an almost horizontal position and the flower in its characteristic position facing the floor.

I grow both genera exactly the same way Tindo, except for the pots, which are regular plastic (sometimes transparent, sometimes black) for Masdevallias and baskets for Draculas. As you know, the more the water is free of salts the better for them. Also a key aspect is the temperature, which must be adequate to the species grown together or their metabolism will not work properly. Then there's the parsimonious fertilization, good air circulation and controlled humidity. These aspects work well for both genera in my experience, at least with the species I grow. |
