My Masdevallia erinacea seems very happy in Semi-Hydro setup. Sorry about the poor photo quality on the 2nd and 3rd closeups.

A good place to start is here: Semi-Hydroponics

Ray may not have invented the technique, but he has been refining it and using it for years. Go to the source! There is lots of discussion in the Semi-Hydroponic sub-forum, but start with the basic documentation.
